Polianthes tuberosa. Polianthes dates back to the Aztecs in Mexico who used the essential oil of the plant to flavor chocolate. Today the oil is a key ingredient in perfumes. Tuberose is a Mexican flowering plant belonging to the agave family, grown as a sweet-smelling greenhouse plant. It has spikes of scented white flowers like lilies and smell a bit like gardenia.

BPAL blends with Tuberose as one of it's ingredients:

Delight, Dreamland, La Belle Au Bois Dormant, Languor, Muse, Nocturne, Sed Non Satiata, Spectre, Stardust.

    In the bottle

Such a pretty creamy sweet white lily smelling floral.

    On

I can't compare this to any of the other floral single notes. It's different and individual yet it's not weird smelling in any way, it smells tropical, fruity and almost coconut like. That's weird but it smells somewhat like a suntan lotion I used to use when I was a teen in the 80's. Can't remember what the name of it was, it didn't have alot of crap in it and had the word tropics in it...that's kind of what this floral reminds me of. I like it alot and I didn't think I would like Tuberose for whatever reason.

    30 minutes

Smells cleaner now that it is drier. Almost Snow White-ish. It's a creamy, nutty floral now almost almond-y on my skin but more soapy and less foody.

    Throw:

    more than average

    Scent category:

    Floral

    Summary

Starts out a tropical smelling creamy floral.

Morphs somewhat into a suntan lotion coconut tropical floral smell which is better than I'm making it sound actually.

Turns into a cleaner, soapier (but still tropical) floral.

Has a bit better than average staying power as it's been about 40 minutes now and I still smell it without having to hunt for it on my arm.

PS. lol, my husband says it smells like Jergen's skin lotion.

    Purchase again?

Not to wear as a floral I don't think, as there are so many more florals I like better, but this is right up there and I'd certainly use it for blending as it would lend an ethereal vibe in that way.

Frankincense is an aromatic gum resin obtained from African and Asian trees. Frankincense is also known as olibanum, which is derived from the Arabic al-lubán (“the milk”), a reference to the milky sap tapped from the frankincense tree.

BPAL blends with Frankincense as one if it's ingredients: All Saints, Anne Bonny, Antony, Arcana, Cathedral, Damnation, Danse Macabre, Deimos, Eclipse, Faustus, Hymn, Kostnice, Magus, Nephilim, Pannychis, Penitence, Psyche, Rose Cross, Seraphim, Titus Andonicus, Torture King, Tzadikim Nistarim.

    In the bottle

    A nice piquant incense smell.

    On

We have pinon nuts that grow wild where I live and the Frankincense smells similar to the bitter woody sap that comes from those pine trees. It's not really warm and sweet as most incenses and resins. It's more pine tree bark smelling with the subtle sweet spiciness on top of that.

    30 minutes

It hasn't changed much but it is a bit softer and a sweeter on my skin now. Still has that turned up edge of bitter woodiness but it's more rounded than it was when wet.

    Throw:

    Aa bit more than average.

    Scent category:

    Resin/Incense

    Summary

This blend doesn't morph on my skin, It smells like woodsy pine tree sap and reminds me of camping while sitting around a campfire but a bit more incensey of a campfire.

    Purchase again?

Yes. This is a comforting smell.

An orchid, vanilla is a viney plant. The vines produce yellow-white orchid flowers which turn into slender beans or pods.

BPAL blends with Vanilla single note as one if it's ingredients:

Bearded Lady, Belle Epoque, Blood Kiss, Desire, Dorian, Eclipse, Euphrosyne, Fee, Freak Show, Gluttony, Golden Priapus, Hollywood Babylon, Hunger, King of Spades, Le Serpent Qui Danse, Love in the Asylum, Mata Hari, O, Pink Phoenix, Siren, Snake Charmer, Snake Oil, Snowblind, Spooky, Tamora, Tombstone, Velvet, Voodoo, White Rabbit, Zephyr.

    In the bottle

What a golden and perfect vanilla bean. Sheesh. :P

    On

    *swoon* The perfect, creamy vanilla.

As it dries but is still somewhat wet it starts to get I dunno to the stage that is familiar to me with Snake Oil et al; It reminds me of a medicinal/bandaid smell.

Why does my skin do this to me?

    30 minutes

When I smell it on my skin 30 minutes later it's so wonderful but still now and again I still get that medicinal smell. Must be my nose.

    Throw:

    average

    Scent category:

    Foody/Spice

    Summary

Initially it is this creamy vanilla heaven in a bottle smell. Than it goes through this morph with my skin chemistry and smells kinda plastic-y or something. And then the scent just vascillates between creamy milky vanilla goodness and chemical plastic bandaid smell.

    Purchase again?

Whenever I need to smell something heavenly I can smell this blend in the bottle. It's that good that I would keep it just for that, and to mix with other sn's too.

BPAL Blends which include Ambergris as one of it's ingredients:

Antony, Black Forest, Cathode, Deimos, Hades, Hellfire, Love in the Asylum, Masquerade, The Black Tower, Torture King, Vicomte De Valmont.

    In the bottle

    An almost citrussy musk

    On

Lovely. It's brighter and fruitier smelling then I imagined. It doesn't have the smell of the sea that I had imagined. It does have a soft warm musk smell in the background but it's not too anything, it's just right and really pretty.

    30 minutes

The bright citrussy quality has toned down, it's more warm and musky now with a subtle sweetness and a slight acidic tang to it.

    Throw:

    Summary

Initially bright sweet yet warm and musky in the background.

Egyptian Amber is one kind of Amber that BPAL utilizes in their blends. Among the different types of ambers used in BPAL blends are: Regular, Tunisian, Black, Grey, Sudanese, Egyptian.

BPAL blends that utilize "Egyptian Amber" single note as an ingredient; "Snake Charmer", "Bastet" and "Hollywood Babylon".

    In the bottle

This is a very pale gold blend.

So light and sweet and beautiful. It has this slight spice or incensey quality to it, smooth and gentle though. I had no idea but Egyptian Amber smells somewhat similar to Sandalwood.

    On

This is a perfect scent if you're into incensey blends. I've always been a Sandalwood freak. This Egyptian Amber is so good that it takes the place previously taken by my beloved Sandalwood.

    30 minutes

At 30 minutes Egyptian Amber single note retains it's lovely, warm, incensey scent only not as strong.

    Throw:

    A bit more than average

    Scent category:

    Resin

    Summary

It has a warm, golden and lightly spiced incense smell immediately and it stays this way, not morphing at all on my skin.

It lasts (thus far for an hour) a fair amount of time too, it does lose the strength of scent when dry but not a huge amount.

This would be so perfect as a meditation blend, but also I'd love to smell this on me all the time as a regular everyday scent.

During the romantic Victorian era, it was doubtless the fondest dream of most brides to carry fresh bouquets of fragrant white orange blossoms on their wedding day. These lovely bouquets were so fashionable that myriads of their blossoms were transported nationwide from Florida just to accommodate brides.

BPAL blends which include Orange Blossom single note:

Baccahnalia, Bess, Catherine, Dracul, Hunger, Jezebel, Lolita, Katarina, Les Infortunes De La Vertu, Maenad, Masquerade, Melpomene, Ravenous, Santa Eularia Des Riu, Succubus, Vicomte De Valmont, Vice, Vixen.

    In the bottle

Wow, very similar to neroli. Orangey but not sweet at all. I've smelled neroli in products but not orange blossom, not by itself and I can't believe how similar they are.

    On

So fresh smelling. Ohh. :P I'm not sure if I got some on my nose or if this has an incredible amount of throw.

    30 minutes

A little goes a long way with this single note which is fabulous. It's one of the strongest smelling, longest lasting bpal blends that I've tried, no lie.

    Throw:

Not sure but I'm thinking it has alot.

    Scent category:

    Floral/Citrus

    Summary

I cannot believe how fresh this smells. A bottle and an imp smell so different. I mean my imp smells the same but it's so amped up in the bottle holy smokes! :D I've never smelled orange blossom before by itself and I'm just so enamored of this. It's a green orange if that makes sense, almost herbal smelling. A just off the tree orange smell, and not one iota of sweetness to it, it doesn't even smell like a flower really more like a cross between a fresh orange and a lemon....but just intoxicating as hell. Goddess bless the person who took such good care of this blend, it's so fresh smelling.

Pikaki is a small off white Hawaiian flower. Either the closed or open flowers are treasured for decorating Lei's.

    In the bottle

Lovely and light, tropical smelling floral.

    On

Lovely and creamy sweet floral, yet has a slight crisp bite to it. It reminds me of honeysuckle mixed with Jasmine but Pikaki is not as strongly scented as those two.

    30 minutes

Doesnt' morph at all, still a beautiful exotic smelling floral.

BPAL blends which include Georgia Peach single note as one of it's ingredients:

    Fruit Moon

    In the bottle

It's better than smelling a real peach from my grocery store that's for sure. This is what it must smell like on the tree.

    On

    Good Lord. This is fabulous.

It's better than I thought it would be. Hardly sweet at all, it's warmer and less bright than I thought but still juicy and lushious.

    30 minutes

What a bonus that this doesn't sink into my skin and disappear. It actually stays smelling like a peach. It doesn't morph in anyway. So smooth.

    Throw:

    Scent category:

    Fruity

    Summary

It's actually juicy smelling. It's got a bit of I dunno, tree, in it...like a piece of bark or a stem smell that doesn't detract from the peach at all but makes it a very wearable peach on me. Not fake smelling at all and not sweet.

    Mata Hari, Miskatonic University.

    In the bottle

Just like opening a fresh container of coffee.

    On

It's coffee lol. It's also got a teeny weeny bit of sweetness at the very end of the sniff.

    30 minutes

It smells of coffee almost a bit woody but still nice and coffeeish. It lasts a more than average amount of time on my skin.

    Throw:

    Scent category:

    Summary

As it dries it smells more like an actual cup of coffee then like fresh ground coffee beans, which is what it does smell like when it's wet.

    2004

    In the bottle

Warm aged maple syrup. We have a lot of sugar skulls during that time of year in my neck of the woods. :P

    On

I smell some candied fruits. Exactly like moist plum dates.

    30 minutes

This dries to an almost espresso smell or a burnt sugar smell now. It turns a little bitter.

    Throw:

    average

    Scent category:

    Foody/resin

    Summary

The wet phase of this 2004 blend is when Sugar skull is best. It smells so warm and carmelized sugary and alot like maple syrup. This 2004 wet stage is the best as it gets in my opinion in both 2004 and 2005 and all phases therein.

    2005

    In the bottle

An almost pickled maple syrup, compratively speaking.

    On

More boozy. And almost sour, but only sour comparitvely. I wouldn't notice it otherwise. I smell a bit of an herbiness way in the back.

    30 minutes

This is drying down much nicer in a fruitier way than the 2004 blend. The boozy scent helps the dried fruitiness have something to hold on to.

The spice that is in here is nice whatever it is, this 2005 blend smells more authentic.

    Throw:

more than average (more than 2004)

    Scent category:

    Foody/resin/fruity/boozy

    Summary

The dry phase of this is the best part of the Sugar Skull 2005 blend. Initially almost sour with the whiskey, brandy or rum scent but eventually it mellows and helps the fruit to hold it's ground and not become as muddy burnt sugar quality as the dried down 2004 blend.

  12. In the bottle

    Yummy blood orange and amber.

    On

I bought this for the blood orange. The vanilla, heliotrope and amber are all things I love too...this is absolutely yummy smelling. It does remind me of "Red Moon" and "Sol" too.

    30 minutes

I was worried about the way it would dry as I thought "something has to go wrong, it can't be this good". I was wrong, it dries on my skin beautifully. When dry it smells like orangey Christmas candy. I don't even know if there is such a thing...but there should be.

    Throw:

    a bit more than average

    Scent category:

    citrus/foody/resin/floral

    Summary

This is so orangey and bright with the blood orange and heliotrope yet the vanilla and amber provide a layer of warming goodness. This all works wonderfully.

I'd say it's right up there with Red Moon, Sol, Seraglio, Al-Shairan for a great BPAL orange blend.

Smells so clean and fresh with a subtle citrus bite and the scent of water.

    On

This is similar to "Blood Lust" and along the same lines as "Malkuth" as well. It's sweeter than I imagined. Like dark candy. I don't smell any grain and it's not particlularly herby on my skin.

    30 minutes

It's very candy like and it smells like red hots mixed with musk.

I do smell more of the grain now.

  15. In the bottle

    Bright, boozy and creamy.

    On

Woo! I smell Bourbon. As soon as the alcohol bourbon smell calms down a bit, a fresh water smell with soil/earth is present. Very nice. In her review "Troubledoll" described what I'm smelling exactly when she said... "like Zombi with the rose replaced with sweetgrass".

    30 minutes

The scent has not strayed from the earthy, fresh green smell.

    Throw:

    average

    Scent category:

    Earthy

    Summary

Initially in the bottle and wet on the skin it's creamy, sweet and filled with bourbon.

As it's drying it's Earthy, boozy, fresh air/ fresh water smelling. Yes, I know it's weird but I smell fresh water, I dunno either.

On my skin it smells so much like one took "Amsterdam" and "Zombi" and mixed them.

How it can go from creamy to fresh is beyond me but it's part of it's magic I guess.

When dry, it is Earth, Air, Water and Fire all at once to me. Mossy earth, fresh air (the sweetgrass smell does that to my nose sometimes), water (dunno) and bourbon (fire :P ). I've still got the glow of the bourbon in my stomach. Bravo.

Different on, but still sexy and darkly fruity. It has more than average throw too.

    30 minutes

At this stage the ozone and musk are more prominent with the currant being less strong than it was 10 minutes ago. Reminds me of "Storm" or "Lightning" meets "Lady MacBeth" or "The Red Queen".

    Throw:

    More than average

    Scent category:

    Fruity/ozone/animalistic

    Summary

The combination of the fruit and the musk is what makes "Lurid" to my liking. It reminds me of Lush's nuclear pink colored bubble bar "It's a Date" or their "Sugar Plum" ballistic a little bit.

I don't smell the lavender a whole lot in "Lurid". I've tried Beth's single note Bulgarian lavender and I can smell it but it's not the overriding scent, on me anyway.

This is right up there with Beths' other berryish, red and black currant blends such as "Lady MacBeth, "The Red Queen" and "Gomorrah". "Lurid" isn't as sweet of a currant scent as "Bordello", "Jester" or "Swank" however.

It also smells similar to "King of Spades" or even "King of Clubs" a little bit.

Lurid smells like one of the above blends mixed with "Storm" or "Lightning".

Sandalwood is one of my favorite things on earth.

#4 smells foody mostly but only a teeny bit incensey.

I like me some pomegranantes but I really didn't see how this was going to work well. I shouldn't have doubted the coupling of the pomegranate and the pumpkin. It's almost odd, but not quite, and certainly not in a yuk way at all. Not at this point anyway.

    30 minutes

Definitely gets more pumpkin-y and less sweet and juicy with the pomegranates.

I dunno if this is a good thing.

There's this nutty or something quality in the middle of everything harshing our mellow with the berries vibe and it's pissing me off. It's like biting into a sweet juicy pear and biting into some of the stringy pulp part.

    I hate when that happens.

    Summary

    In the bottle is fab.

On my skin is alright for awhile until it dries it becomes off somehow.

This is one to have just for the Chaos Theory quality of it all.

I think I like my "Swank" or "The Red Queen" for my dark red fruity blends.

    Purchase again?

    Not sure.

Here's my not too good picture of what the bottle looks like. http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL202/154131...4/117455265.jpg

    In the bottle

In the bottle is what makes me think this is going to be my favorite of the Pumpkin Patch blends...lightly toasted hazelnut, cocoa and pumpkin in the background. Wow. This might just make up for "Spooky".

    On

Naturally it doesn't smell as good on my skin as it did in the bottle, but at least it does so immediately. That said, Pumpkin Patch #2-Pumpkin, Cocoa, Hazelnut and Walnut blend will now be my foody chocolate BPAL blend of choice moving forward, straying completely from the previous Bliss/Vice/Morocco trinity.

    30 minutes

It does go through a chalky phase on my skin as it starts to dry. BPAL's "Morocco" and "Spooky" both do this on me also. Spooky does this in spades for me so that it's just acrid and smokey smelling. Pumpkin Patch #2 gets almost dry, dark and smokey but it is able to stay a nice yummy smelling blend on my skin. The pumpkin actually comes out a bit more for me when it's dry. Go figure, it's a nice surprise.

    Summary

This smells like a 4 star "pastry designer's" dessert in the bottle.

As it dries it turns somewhat more chalky smelling on me then the pumpkin comes back and smells more like toasted, sweet pumpkin seeds (almost like a caramlized pumpkin sugar that one takes off the boiler right before the "burn" stage) and cocoa and nuts. Not a spicy pumpkin blend at all but definitely rich, dark and warm.

The scent lasts a bit longer than the average BPAL blend.

    Purchase again?

Yes. If I ran out I would buy another 5ml.

  23. The 2nd alcohol based scent that I try today from BPAL...hmm...I sense a theme based BPAL collection brewing in my head.

    In the bottle

Even more juniper like than "The Hamptons", and definitely more alcohol smell of "Swank".

    On

    A lot of juniper/Gin smell.

    30 minutes

Hasn't morphed at all, it's a nice true juniper smell.

    Summary

21 is more of a nice conifer smell than alot of the BPAL pine blends.

If I wanted that wonderful juniper scent that is almost a single note and clear and not too anything, i'd want to wear 21. If I wanted more of a cocktail type of scent I would want to wear "The Hamptons" instead I think.

"21" is a nice blend to have and use in a collection of BPAL alcohol cocktail blends patterned after cocktails made from clear liquors such as Vodka and Gin. :P

    In the bottle

This is so much more of a real cosmo smell than "Swank". This isn't as berry like with the pomegranate. I've loved "Swank" as a top ten blend for years but this is the real thing, well it smells like the real thing anyway. This seems to have more of a citrus smell too.

    On

It's so fresh and wonderful smelling. It smells clean, fresh, a bit Gin-like, a bit citrussy, a bit green. Love it.

    30 minutes

Doesn't morph in any way, it stays that lovely, crisp, juniper/Gin, fruity, cosmospolitan scent.

Sweet mother of God. It smells like cream and caramel. Um, I actually smell cream in here. I didn't think Trick or Treat would smell this good at all.

    On

The cream part kinda goes away and now I can almost here the "crack" of the spoon against the flamed sugar topping of a creme brulee.

It's scent becomes similar to Sugar Skull (2004, I haven't smelled 2005 yet) quickly, though I was never this knocked out by Sugar Skull.

As Trick or Treat dries it turns even more burnt sugar-y and even takes on an almost caramel coffee-like scent on me.

    30 minutes

It has a lovely dark coffee caramel smell.

    Summary

I like the milkiness of it in the bottle vs. on my skin. It's just absolutely yummy (it made me crave candy okay) in the bottle. My skin is not playing well with others. :P But that said it's still a yummy scent :D just not a "5 star" as it was in the bottle.

    Purchase again?

Maybe. If I could just smell it in the bottle, God yes, tons and tons.
