Wet - cherries and…something. Something dark, something that makes my eyes water. Dry - cherries fade and my eyes stop watering, and this turns very pleasant. I recognize this note, but I can name it. It's nice, but in all honesty, this really isn't something I would wear. On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 2.

Wet - cinnamon, but a soft, light cinnamon, more pink than red. Probably some dragon's blood and possibly carnation too. Dry - this is what I was hoping Fire Eater would smell like. This is really nice. It's soft and warm, spicy but not too spicy. I seem to detect an herbal element, but I am not sure what it is. Ooh, after a while, I think red musk peaks its head out. Oh this is truly gorgeous, and lasts a decent amount of time as well. I will definitely consider getting a bottle of this down the road, it's that good. On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 4.

I have been waiting so long to try this one, because…Nuit! Wet - this is a gorgeous white floral. II am presuming that it is moonflower I am smelling, because it's not particularly familiar. Whatever it is, it's a lovely springtime scent. Dry - White musk comes out as does the white rose. Unfortunately the rose goes a bit powdery on me. The powdery rose doesn't last too long, it is soon replaced by a more pleasant powdery floral that is is similair to Numb without the chill. This is quite nice and lasts a decent amount of time, but I doubt I will need more than an imp of it. On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 3

I am not a big fan of grapefruit, but I love white tea, apple blossom and ginger, so when the opportunity presented itself, I thought I would give this a try. Wet - The grapefruit is the most prominent note, but it's not overwhelming. Dry - as this dries the grapefruit softens up a bit, blends with the tea. This is a very light, pretty blend. A tad too light for me perhaps, but it is very nice, and were it not discontinued I would consider getting a bottle eventually. As it is I will definitely use the imp. The crisp, clean scent of green tea touched with lemon verbena and honeysuckle. Wet - green tea with lemon. Dry - the same, but fainter. After half an hour I can barely smell this. Pretty, bu much too light for me. On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 2

Wet - this smells remarkably like Catherine in the bottle. Rosemary must be one of the Mediterranean herbs, because its that combination of rosemary and orange blossom that I smell. Dry - as it dries it quickly softens up. It's very orange; a combination of the citrus and orange blossom I presume. After awhile the jasmine comes out, but it's very soft. This is a soft, pretty, slightly sweet blend, that I like much better than Catherine. Still, it's not quite for me. On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 2

I have such a problem with amber. While it smells lovely, it usually disappears on contact with my skin, and it will take all the other notes with it. And then sometimes it goes all funky. I have found however, that black amber works beautifully on me. Testing this imp is an experiment to see how Egyptain amber works on my skin. Wet - mmm, there is a pungent smokieness in the bottle. This smells different than I expect, spicier. Dry - It smells almost musty on my skin. A few minutes later, I get dusty, musty and nearly gone. This is without a doubt one of the ambers I can't wear.

Myrrh - identifying its scent, picking the best blends
wickedgoddess replied to aedes's topic in Recommendations
I love myrrh so I have tried many of the myrrh scents. Don't let the chocolate scare you from Velvet; it's sweet but not particularly foody. It's one of my favorites. Another great choice is Athens, which is honey and myrrh, with a bit of wine. Once again, it's sweet but not foody. I find myself craving that scent sometimes. Anubus is glorious! At first the embalming herbs scared me away, but embalming herbs are herbs, spices, honey....it's not a light scent, but it's magnificent! Sin is also wonderful, but if you don't like patchouli you should probably stay clear. The same with Wicked and florals. It's very floral, so you probably should avoid it. The soft myrrh in Bastet and Nefertitti is just that, very soft. I barely recognize myrrh in those scents. I hope that helped! -
Preconceived notions - I love clove and bourbon, and like frankincense, leather, smoke and musk, but the lime and vetiver scare me. I am curious to try this, but doubt I will like it. Wet - sharp, bitter, masculine. I get lime and possibly ambergris. It's dark and angry. Dry - vetiver comes on strong now. IT fades relatively quickly though, allowing the frankincense to peek through. About 3 hours in, I get a pleasant mix of musk, vetiver and frankincense. Sadly the clove and bourbon never manage to make a noticable appearance. This is okay, but really it just makes me want to go put some Geek on. Not for me. On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 2.

I have an 8 year old son, who is almost as big a BPAL fan as I am. He loves the eucalyptus scents the most, and has his own imps of Hemlock & Jabberwocky, and was recently gifted his first bottle of BPAL, Loup Garou, by a generous forumite. He sniffs all of my oils as I test them, and tests many of them on himself. He's gotten so good at indentifying notes that sometimes he blows me away! I don't wear any special oils when I am around him, he gets them all!

Wet - in the bottle this smells quite good, although I really can't name any notes. It's very refreshing..eucalyptus perhaps. Dry - I can barely smell anything at all on my skin, and what I can smell is somewhat unpleasant. There is something metallic smelling, but it's a metallic tinged by decay. I wash it off, but some of it still clings to me...putridness. Yeah, this one's definitely not for me! On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 1.

Wet - wow, that's orange all right! This is the orangyiest orange ever. Dry - Hmmm, just when I think I've got this all figured out it morphs on me. I think it's the benzoin that I am smelling now. The orange, while still present, is subdued, and this is becoming very interesting. No bottle for me, solely because I like Al-Shairan better as an orange blend, but it is nice. On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 3.

Wet - dirt and perfume. The loam smell is strongest, but the perfume is very pretty. Dry - Oh yes, at first the perfume starts out elegant, almost Noirish, and then the ginger comes out. Elegant and spicy, with a dirt background. Love! Another one that's not particularly strong on me, but I don't care, I need a bottle of this anyway, On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 5

Wet - Mmmm, this is delicious. I get incense and the sweetness of neroli combined. Dry - as this dries the incense becomes less prominent on me, and the neroli, bergamot and carnation take over. This is much sweeter than I expected. This might actually be too sweet on me. I tried it a second time and it is sweet, but not too sweet. It's not love, but I will probably hang on to the bottle, at least for now. On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 3

Wet - I have been obsessing about Pumpkin King ever since Quantum Spice gave me a sniff at the L.A. meet 'n' sniff. In the bottle, it is the best BPAL oil I have ever smelled, bar none. Pumpkin and spice, but much spicier and creamier than Jack or Samhain. Dry - OMFG! This is the perfect blend. Pumpkin, nutmeg, clove, ginger, cinnamon, vanilla..I even think I smell a bit of apple in here. As much as I love Samhain, this is even better. Decent amount of throw too. The longer I wear it, the less prominent the pumpkin becomes, it's all about spice now. I am pleasantly suprised at the similiarity to Bengal on dry-down. Bengal is of course missing the creamy pumpkin and apples, and is not as strong or long-lasting, but there is a similiarty in the spices. Wet - wow, pine and eucalyptus! That really clears my sinuses. Dry - as it dries the orange comes to the forefront and sweetens up the whole mix. The notes balance each other very well, once dry it's neither too sharp nor too sweet, but in all honesty this just isn't for me. On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 2

Wet - I smell a bit of vanilla, and…darkness. If darkness had a smell it would be this. Dry - maybe it's not vanilla, it might be tonka. Whatever it is, it almost entirely disappears once it touches my skin. Slowly it starts to come back as….powder. Powder with a tiny bit of tonka. Oops, tonka's gone too. That's it folks, it's gone to powder on my skin. Shows over here....nothing more to see. On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 2

Wet - orange, cloves and incense. Dry - The peach appears. I was worried about the peach note, but it just adds a touch of sweetness to the orange. This is purely incense and cloved oranges and yes, it is gorgeous. Dark and sweet, but not too sweet, this is the best orange scent yet! Wet - this is the most gorgeous combination of spices imaginable! I get ginger and honey, with cinnamon and clove in the background. Not at all like Three Witches, this is absolutely delicious, and pretty darn foody. Dry - Not much throw, so I reapply and want to gnaw my wrists off. Yeah, this will end up in my top three! But then it fades away in about an hour leaving behind only...orris? Is that orris I smell? That's all that's left. No spices nothing. My heart is broken! I will keep this and love this, but I really wish it loved me half as much as I love it. Keep in mind, your mileage may vary, this is purely my bum chemistry. Wet - sweet woods. Dry - more of the same, sweet woods. This is a beautiful scent, but I wish it was a bit stronger on me. I will definitely keep the imp, but probably not a bottle, although I am not entirely ruling it out. On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 3

Wet - grapefruit and something pretty in the background. Dry - well, there's grapefruit…. Oh yeah, I'm getting a little lotus now too. Unfortunately, that's all I get, and neither grapefruit nor lotus are notes I like. Off to the swap pile, posthaste! On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 2

Wet - surprisingly sour honey. Dry - as this dries this becomes Athens lite. I love Athens enough to have a bottle of it, but this is like a pale imitation. It's neither as strong nor as complex. I don't get any smoke or incense from this, just honey and wine. Pleasant enough, but so light I can barely smell it, even though it does seem to last a few hours. On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 2

Wet - wow, strong pine and snow?! Dry - the pine fades and the berries come out to play. This is nicer than I expected, a cool, crisp wintery blend with just a light touch of fruit. On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 3

Origin - imp received in a swap Preconceived notions - I wanted to try this because of the chamomile, which has become one of my favorite notes, but violets are vile on me, so this could go either way. Wet - I get chamomile straight off along with something not quite as pleasant. Dry - the lovely smell of chamomille intermingled with the foul smell of violets. Sigh. I think whenever violets are present my dislike of them makes them take over the blend. After about an hour all I could smell was violets. Oh well, it was worth a shot. Origins - decanted imp received in a swap. Oh who doesn't need a little extra personal magnetism in their life?! I am going to be job searching soon, and while I already picked up some Blockbuster, this sounds like it may be even better. Wet - wet this is darky and sultry. There is an incensy smell here, musk perhaps. It's gorgeous, but not at all what I expected. Dry - as soon as it begins to dry, the incensy smell fades away leaving roses! Roses and maybe a touch of lavender, I'm not sure, I thought I got lavender clearly there for a moment, but it vanished as quickly as it appeared. Whether or not it was lavender, there's something else here with the rose, another floral note I think. The rose goes a little powdery on me, as some of the BPAL rose notes do, but the other floral is preventing it from going too far south. This dries into a light rose and something else note and is very pretty. Looks like there will probably be a big bottle of this in my future. And while I really don't know the effectiveness of this yet, I definitely felt more confident while wearing this. Yeah, this is good stuff! On the wickedgoddess scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being best, this rates a 4 (scent only.)
