I just discovered Black Lily, and it may be my new spring scent. I'm not usually much of a floral gal, but occasionally a floral will rock my world. This one is elegant yet fresh, sweet yet not cloying, and oh-so-springy to me. I don't know how often I will wear it, but when I want to herald the first days of spring, this might just be the one to wear.

Thank you everyone for the wonderful recommendations! I'm busy making a list for an imp pack, or to scour the swap pages for. Great ideas, and I'm feeling hopeful I'll find something.

I wanted to bump this thread to see if anyone had any new recs for spring 2008. I seem never to find the perfect spring scent because of a number of things: ~my skin turns many "clean" scents into dryer sheets (embalming fluid, dirty, for example) ~scents too heavy on the florals, with nothing else to ground them, just don't feel like "me" no matter how much I try (Eos, Vasakasajja, Endymion, Hell's Belle, Pele, for example) ~fruit can go overboard and way too sweet on me (Hungry Ghost Moon, Fae, Aglaea, for example) ~scents that are too "green" can go sharp on me (all the Beltanes I've tried, and Shanghai, The Apothecary--I think the tea note is hit or miss on me) So, the things that come to mind and that I WANT to love for spring so often don't work on me that I'm perplexed. Some of the scents that have come closest to working on me are: Kumiho (but it fades so quickly) To Helen (but then the beeswax took over) Rose Red (but I'm not bowled over by rose in general) Litha and Et Lux Fuit both did something weird on my skin, which I think the more complex ones sometimes do on me. My non-springy (to me) faves are: Underpants, Boomslang, Snake Charmer, Midway, Vixen, Glowing Vulva, Tushnamatay, Candy Butcher. Sigh. I know I'm a pain in the arse. But if anyone has any suggestions I'd be eternally grateful. I guess I'm looking for some atypical scents that maybe I haven't thought of as spring that give that vibe to others. Maybe there are some out there I just haven't thought of that might work! Any of your faves that you can rave about might just be my new love. Thanks for any help you can direct my way!

I think my nose must be crazy, especially considering the powerful inspiration for this scent, but on me I'd swear I was smelling a version of Chanel No. 5 on the drydown--soft and powdery in the best way. I'm definitely considering a bottle.

This is a lovely honied, fruity floral. It's happy and flirty. It may be too floral for me, but I'm going to give it another try before deciding. Those of you who love sweet, fruity florals, though, I would definitely recommend this. ETA: I'm relearning the importance of testing things more than once. Today I'm really liking this. I get more honey and maybe musk, so the florals are toned down a bit, and I'm not getting anything too fruity today. It's still probably not an everyday scent for me, but I can see craving this when I want to feel playful and flirty. I don't really have anything like this in my collection, so I think it might stay. And I love the idea of having this art on my dresser, so yeah, I think this might be a keeper.

My review on this one falls into the category of a nose gone bonkers or crazy skin chemistry. At first this is a jumble of notes, mostly jasmine, cinnamon, sandalwood and vanilla, I think. Then, the craziness happens. The notes meld together and smell like ... pineapple. Quite strange. Not unpleasant, but not at all what I was looking for in this scent. And I had such high hopes for this one! ETA: Sniffed this one again on the second day, and I'm able to pick apart the notes a bit more (so I can attempt more than "pineapple"!) It's still fruity to me, and I guess that's the honey, champaca, jasmine and vanilla working together. And it's still the ghost of pineapple. But I like it more, and I'm thinking I need to give this one some time. Maybe my nose needs to adjust to it. It's certainly cheerful--bright and sweet but with some depth--and I could use a cheerful scent this grey time of year.

This one is beautiful. I agree that it's unisex. Hubby wasn't willing to try it on yesterday, but he loved the smell on me, and I know it will smell divine on him when he's willing. It's very well blended--smooth amber deepended by the cedar and saffron and lifted slightly by the herbally litsea cubeba. Quite a stunner, really.

I hadn't thought of Midnight Kiss for New Year's Eve, but how perfect!

Wow, this one surprised me. I'm not a floral person, and this is indeed a floral perfume. However, the florals are set in a creamy backdrop and together they create this smooth, subtly sweet, floral veil. It's unlike any other fragrance I have since and I think I'll reach for it when I want to feel calm and relaxed. Perhaps a Saturday morning perfume. I really like it and I see myself purchasing a bottle before it leaves town.

I don't have anything to say about this one that hasn't been said, but I love it. It's definitely a cooling, springtime, grassy scent. The epitome of green. I don't think I'll wear it much until spring arrives, but I'm planning on snagging a bottle to have waiting for me then.

That's how I've been saying it so if you're wrong, then we're both wrong! Maybe this is one of those times where the obvious pronunciation is actually correct!
-
How 'bout Sudha Segara? I've been saying it pretty straight forwardly: SOO-duh Seh-GARE-uh, but I'm realizing that the way I assume many of these scents are pronounced is often dead wrong! So, if anyone has a wildly different way to pronounce it, or insight into the Hindi pronunciation, I'd be grateful!

I just found my little imp of Thalia, from the Gratiae-- representing "good cheer," with plumeria, pear and white champagne. It's quite cheerful and uplifting, living up to its description.

Oops, sorry to be off topic. I deleted my post since it didn't fit with this thread.

A sinister, sinuous incense of summoning, a herald and paean to the Primordial Gods of Darkness, Chaos, Madness and Decay. Oh how I would love to know the notes of this one. My nose isn't good enough to figure them out, but I love this. People have mentioned benzoin, oppoponax, saffron, amber, sandalwood, and all of those could be in there. I swear I get a bit of coconut, too. It's smooth, sweet and faintly resinous on me. Its not sinister at all, more comforting and slightly exotic. I've only had it on for 30 minutes, but if the love lasts, this will be a bottle purchase.

This one dries down to a gorgeous, soft, creamy, sweet and fruity scent. It's way too pretty to feel like "me" but it's truly lovely. It surprised me because there were so many notes listed I simply couldn't imagine how they would meld together. This is fitting of it's namesake.

When Event Horizon dries down, I'm smelling a lot of opium tempered and sweetened slightly by the other notes so that it ends up a deep, smooth, rich and resinous scent. I really like it. I can't stop smelling my wrist, but I don't think it's really "me" and I probably won't wear it much. I'd love to smell this on someone else though.

On me this is mostly patchouli. I do enjoy patchouli, but I was really excited about a vanilla-y, coconutty scent deepened with patchouli rather than another patchouli single note to wear. I'm going to keep it around and try it again. It could just be my nose today, and the possiblities of this one are too good to let go of right away.

Looking for a BPAL that Resembles a Favorite Perfume

Interesting. I'll have to try Herba Fresca again soon. I'm wearing Baobhan Sith today and it's been reminding me of Creed Fleurissimo with it's sophisticated/floral/sparkly vibe. Also, regarding Old Spice, both hubby and I were commenting that Mr. Jacquel smells like Old Spice on him. At least how we're both remembering Old Spice to smell! -
I can definitely see why this is being compared to Hungry Ghost Moon, but as that one went a bit cloying on my skin, this is the perfect variation of it for me. It's cheerful, smooth, slightly sweet and tart with a creamy muskiness. I think I'm going to enjoy this one. ETA: This is still absolutely lovely upon drydown, but perhaps too lovely for me. It's so delicately feminine that I don't feel like myself when I wear it. LOL.

One to try might be Xiuhtecuhtli in the Excolo section. It's got the orange note you're looking for and some have compared it to commercial perfume. On me it's a tropical, rather light but complex scent although to some it's reminiscent of Angel. Some of the other notes are lush florals and greenery, if I'm remembering correctly.

What a surprise this one was to me! It's the first definite winner of the Snake Pit for me. I was afraid of the mint, and Snake Oil often does the Play Doh thing on my skin, but the mint and tea mixed with the Snake Oil in this blend is the most wonderful, refreshing-yet-complex scent on my skin. I keep getting the most wonderful wafts of it as I go about my housework. I think I'm in love.

I don't have anything original to add, but I just have to say that this really is almost exactly Snake Oil on my skin after drydown, but it's Snake Oil that doesn't go to Play Do powder on me. Yay! The cocoa somehow keeps it deep and rich and spicy. I love it!

Best scents for performing, public speaking, anytime on stage

I just received Mama Ji and was trying to decide what I thought of it. It's not quite "me" but my hubby loves it, so I was keeping it around to try again. Today I realized it might make a wonderful bellydance scent. It's spicy, warm, exotic and sacred feeling somehow. I don't have it figured out yet, but I think it might make a wonderful component for dance. -

Thank you, Heavenlyrabbit! Cottonmouth is sounding better and better and definitely going on my list of to-try.
