So you're devastated about Antique Lace...
AthenaRose replied to ivyandpeony's topic in Recommendations
Is Antique Lace still unavailable? Is it ever comming back? It was one of my favourites. I was about to buy a big bottle of it, but it dissapeared before i had a chance. So sad. I even had a friend comment the other day... she was like, 'how come you don't wear Antique Lace anymore?' Aww Morocco and Black Opal are the closest things i have to it... and they aren't close enough. -
Hmmm, like a mix of Dorian and Dracul without the spice. This is sweet vanilla evergreen trees, and very yummy. This is what tree-shaped Christmas sugar cookies should taste like, haha. Since my fiancé wasn't too fond of Dorian and Dracul on himself, i'm pleased that he enjoys wearing this one. I could wear this one too, it's pretty nice on me as well. 4/5

I can see the CK and AXE comparisons, but this is soooo much better than those. It smells amazing on the fiancé and it's one of his favourites. 4/5

Delicious! This one smells fantastic on my fiancé. I'm loving the spiced rum. Is that cinnamon? The spicy boozyness kindof reminds me of Dr. McGillicuddy's Fireball Whiskey, haha. Then there's the dryness of the wood, and the saltyness of the sea air, and yes... a hint of something sweet, but i don't know if i would call it perfume. He's a big fan of Old Spice, but this is waaaaaaaay better. Much more complex and not chemically. It's beautiful on him, but i could wear this too. I'll have to try not to steal it. 4/5

Villain smells wonderful on my fiancé. It's soft and gentle, but mascline for sure. It smells a lot like his aftershave. What a beautiful blend!! This is one of my favourites on him. 4/5

Named in honor of Vlad III, Tepes, of the Order of the Dragon. Black musk, tobacco, fir, balsam of peru, cumin, bitter clove, crushed mint, and orange blossom. Christmas tree. I think it's the fir and the clove that do that for me. But yep, that's what this smells like on me, pure Christmas tree. A little spicy, and a little bit of sweetness from the orange blossom, but very fresh and deep forest green. I actually really like this. 4/5

Haha, interesting. This is Gabriel Knight, in wolf form. Warm reddish fur. Cozy. Wild and powerful, yet not threatening. I thought amber and i didn't get along, but it seems to be okay in this blend. Would it be strange to wear it on a full moon? Awwoooooooooo! And it gets better the longer it's been on. 3/5

My fiancé wasn't all that fond of this one on him, so i tried it too. Starts out sharp and minty. Then the mintyness fades and it turns into a warm sweet smokyness with a bit of leather. Very Sherlock Holmes... sitting in a leather chair, smoking a pipe. Nice enough, if you like that sort of thing. Too masculine for me. 2/5

Wasn't anything special on my fiancé so i tried it on me. Eww. Something in my skin chemistry turns Lightning into something sour and dirty. I like the smell of ozone (i use a high frequency machine at the spa i work at) and this doesn't smell anything like that at all. This is not fresh or electric charged at all. It smells like a sour, nasty chemical... kindof like an outhouse. Gross. 1/5

I'm stealing this from my fiancé because it smells better on me. He actually told me that it smells very feminine on me (yay!) The Bow & Crown of Conquest is one of the first blends i've tried that has cedar in it that doesn't go strongly cedar on me. Initially, i'm reminded of Dorian, with the vanilla/musk, but i can smell something herby (the sage?) and a sweet creamy spicy florals (carnation/lavender) with the saltyness of the leather holding it all down. And the cedar is in there, complimenting the other notes, and not stealing center stage like it normally does. It all blends together so well. He's not getting this one back, haha. 4/5

It's leather alright. Nice enough on it's own if you want to smell like a new pair of shoes, haha... but think i'll like it better for layering. On it's own it's a bit sharp and i feel like it needs something to soften it a bit. I prefer leather mixed with other notes, like Jolly Rodger. I'll keep it for layering, because maybe i'll discover something that works really well with it. 3/5 Okay, wow. If you haven't tried this... try layering De Sade with Bliss! Chocolate and leather! It's yummy!

True, perfect golden light, refined into an incomparably glorious scent. An imp i got for my fiancé that wasn't one of his favs, so i'm trying it on me to see if i can wear it. Cedar? I think i tend to amp cedar, because i don't smell much of anything else. It's a dry, dusty, slightly charred cedar though. This is like Tombstone without the vanilla, but Tombstone was mostly cedar on me too. 3/5 because as much as i like cedar, it tends to overpower everything else in the blend making it not as dynamic as the other BPALs that i love. But it's still cozy and warm.

I recieved Scarecrow as a frimp, and at first i thought it was very strange, and i didn't like it all that much... but sure enough, it grew on me and it's now one of my favs. It wasn't until the 3rd time that i tried it that i really started loving it though. Smells like sweet grasses and oil to me.

Sea spray with an undercurrent of leather, Bay Rum, and salty, dry woods. Another imp for my fiancé that he was indifferent about, so i claimed it. It starts out fresh and salty, and then turns to salty leather, and then warms up and turns a little spicy on me. Interesting. It has quite a range, from the cool, fresh sea spray, then the leather, then the warmth of the rum and wood. It morphs a lot of me, but maintains aspects of the saltyness, like a gentle breeze blowing over sea air and leather grounded by rum soaked wood. I feel very piratey indeed, yeargh! So much so, that i now want to dress up as a pirate for halloween. 4/5

Beautiful. I bought this imp for my fiancé and it wasn't really his cup of tea (haha) but i stole it for myself because it is delicious! Musky vanilla tea. It's really quite lovely. He likes it on me much better than on him, which is perfect, because i'm not giving it back. 4/5

The Antikythera Mechanism
AthenaRose replied to suki's topic in Phoenix Steamworks & Research Facility
Another Imp i got for my fiancé. He wasn't wowed by it, it's not really his style. So i decided to give it a try. This is a dark, masculine vanilla. Much sweeter and more vanilla on my fiancé and much darker and more masculine on me (which always seems to be the case when we try the same sent, he amps sweetness, and i amp woods). It's pleasant enough on me, and not overwhelmingly masculine. It's definately wearable. It's a dark rich vanilla (not sweet) that for some reason reminds me of a dirty version of Stimulating Sassafrass Strengthener, yet the only note they share besides vanilla is oak. But yeah, on me... this is evil dirty rootbeer, but in a good way, haha. And this one does not turn buttery and sour like SSS does. 3/5 -
I bought an imp of this for my fiancé to try, and he didn't care for it. So i tried it myself. Soapy. Like hand-soap. Reminds me of Kiss My Face self foaming handsoap... the "c-weed" one that has aloe and lemon in it. I like Kiss My Face products, but that particular scent always smelled somewhat like urine to me. So much, that when my fiancé would wash his hands with it, i'd be like... "hey... you've been using the urine soap!". And well, Embalming Fluid, sadly, reminds me of that. So no, not for me. It's similar to Shanghai, which i prefer because the sweetness in Shanghai makes it more wearable, personally. 2/5

Skeletor??????? What? Yep. Skeletor scratch & sniff stickers. I'm so not kidding. Weird. *puts IMP back in the box and lets it age for a while* ETA: I did a quick google search and apparently there was an old He-Man toy named 'Stinkor' who was actually scented with patchouli oil, so maybe this is what i'm remembering? Does Snake Oil have patchouli in it?

Uh O.... I really wanted to love this. Vanilla and honey seem to be good on me in the other blends that i've tried. But on me, O goes sour. It's a sour sweet smell that eventualy fades into a sour sweet powder smell. I have a feeling that amber might not like my skin. I'm not sure if i've tried any other BPAL's with amber in them, but i don't think i have. I might need to stay away from it. My fiancé didn't think it was great either. 2/5

Butter tarts! Warm gooey butter tarts with lots of raisins. Cockaigne is like The Knave of Hearts without the roses, and with more butteryness. And there is some wine. I really like this one, it's very yummy. Sadly, my fiancé doesn't like this one very much. It's a bit too foody for him. He prefers The Knave of Hearts because the roses keep it from being too much like baked goods. But Cockaigne is pure baked goods! I don't mind smelling like food though, i still like it and i will definately use up my imp (probably when he's not around, haha) 4/5

How strange. I can't decide if i like this one or not. There is something about it that i like, and something else about it just seems... odd. I can't place it. In the IMP: Glue? Yeah, white glue. Drydown: Flowers and wood? I'm catching something that reminds me of Van Van, but that doesn't help much, since that doesn't have it's notes listed either. Is there neroli in this? It has that strange almost sickly sweet floraly smell that i get from neroli, but it's blended so well i can't really tell. Dry on my skin: Soft strange powdery floral that dissapears pretty quickly. I've reapplied several times and i still can't figure it out. There's something in it that smells strange... actually it kindof smells like that weird sweet smell in the air right after my fiancé sneezes. (yeah, you'd have to smell that to understand) I'm not sure if i want to smell like that.

A gentle, soothing blend of cherry blossom, white sandalwood and star anise. wet: cherry! drydown: licorice! This is cherry licorice, but not like a cherry twizzlers... this is heavier richer black cherry licorice. Must be the white sandalwood that deepens it and keeps it from being too sugary-candy like. Whoa, memory flashback... suddenly i'm like 11 years old again, sitting on the dock at Harrison Lake at night eating those black licorice candies... the ones that are coated in different colours... what were they called? Goodies! Yeah, it's the smell of candy coated black licorice and the wood of the dock at night. I like this, but my fiancé is not a fan of black licorice. Too bad. I think i'll still wear it anyway. 3/5

On me, Shanghai is green tea with lemon, and a touch of sweetness from the honeysuckle. This is a clean and refreshing blend. Actually, this reminds me of those Nestlé Pure Life Green Tea Refreshers that i used to drink, until i got sick of Splenda and found them too sickeningly sweet. 3/5

Interesting. To me, Black Phoenix smells similar to Hecate and Blood, both of which i really enjoy. Wet, i'm getting a strong cherry almond dragon's blood. After a while it dries down to what appears to be a softer incensy floraly musky myrrh. Lots of depth and quite a range from wet to dry. 3/5

Very citrusy at first (must be the bergamot) but after it dries down it turns into a gentle powdery rosy carnation. Not bad, but not really anything special on me either. 3/5
