  1. Wow, I'm so jealous of all these coconut-marshmallow-toasted-nuts-cream comments. :(

On me this is like pretty almost exactly like Halfling with much less of the spice, and that is to say pretty close to a buttered popcorn flavoured Jelly Belly jelly bean. I'd love to be more wordy about it, but that really encapsulates it.

I guess there is more than one "cream" note, because most of the time they are actually creamy and great, like Zarita, Katrina Van Tassel, Venus Libitina, or Reflected Vulva, and then there is a cream that somehow got churned into butter and then left out on the table, and that's what I get from this. I kind of hope there's variation involved like happened with Very Pink Surprise Cake, because I wasn't the only one who felt this way, and I STILL want this (and Halfling too, for that matter) to end up being awesome.

  2. I came to read the thread to find out if I was completely and utterly out of my mind. I just received a decant in a swap, and it was one I asked for, so when I opened it and smelled cucumbers I was instantly confused. I couldn't remember the exact description or notes, but I was thinking it was on the resiny spectrum and so I ran here to both remember the notes in the scent and see if anyone else got cucumbers. Then I read all the remarks and decided someone should come to the defense of this.

In the imp: Cucumbers! Juicy cucumbers, and dry hay. Or almost woodish, but in a mellow, dry way, not the resiny wood of a Heavenly Love and Earthly Love, or an Anubis.

On wet: Cucumbers are receding, morphing into the papery thing I'm supposed to be getting. There's the barest hint of leather, and not in that "some musky dude is wearing a fresh new black leather jacket and that's all you can smell and deargodmakeitstop!" that I get from leather (I'm not a fan in general-- though I have liked the dab-of-leather-in-a-sexy-resin type of leather, like Olisbos and Variety of Pleasing Amusements. Hrm, weird pattern there!)

As it dries more, I really do get the feeling evoked of dry paper and an old leather cover, and some light but sweet softness (tonka?) to it all that really brings it together. Granted, my skin tends to amp any sweet notes, so that may be why I get none of the mold that others do. But I'm getting the description from it, and I don't always get that, so I'm super bemused right now. It doesn't have a lot of throw, at least not on me, but it's close to the skin with a mellow, not-too-dry and not-too-sweet, not really "feminine" and not exactly "masculine" either (in the traditional assumptions of those terms of course). I'd try this on just about anybody. It could go another way on a dude, I'm guessing. And I love that it's a bookish scent, since Miskatonic U didn't work for me either.

    I like it!

  3. No one has asked, but since I stumbled upon this thread I thought I would mention that Eat Me is the grown-up, super-heroine, world-saving, cake-baking older sister of Bath & Body Works' "Dark Kiss". So much that I amused myself with a $3 bargain spray of Dark Kiss while waiting to order or swap for Eat Me.

(I haz Eat Me now though... *eats cake, saves world!*)

I have to confess though, that I too am curious what a BPAL counterpart to "Irresistable Apple" would be. And sort of "Butterfly Flowers" too.

    Butterly Flowers:

Top Notes: Black Tea, Mouthwatering Tangerine, Cyclamen, Banana Leaf

Mid Notes: Maxillaria Tenufolia Orchid, Asian Syringa Flower, French Mimosa

Base Notes: Creamy Coconut Milk, Musk

I know I've seen "cyclamen" in a few Lab descriptions lately. But I don't see a lot of mimosa from the Lab, sadly! Real mimosa is such a heavenly smell!

  4. I came here to read the reviews before testing the imp I had. I don't remember who sent me the imp, but I had never even removed the plumber's tape so I felt it was time to finally sniff! Most of the reviews (at least on the first page) had such lovely things to say that I got my hopes up.

    That was a mistake. :/

I envy all the people who got soft florals and delicate nostalgic feelings of loved ones! In the imp for me this was lavender, but I've had quite a bit of experience with scents that smell like lavender in the bottle/imp and then change immediately (looking at you, Yvaine!) so I dabbed it on and waited. It passed through a phase of icky honey smell, that notorious bad-honey that ilicits lots of colourful descriptions. I skimmed a few more reviews for any tales of honey. None. So this funk was coming from something else.

Now, dry, it's definitely soap like a lot of people got, but for me it's not soap you want to bathe with. It's soap you've already bathed with, it's dirty, funky, acrid, and almost instigating queasiness (granted I am overdue for lunchtime so my tummy is maybe testier than usual).

It seems to be mellowing a tad, but it's still nothing like what any of the good reviews got!

(I don't know if it helps to use as reference, but for me, honeys are way iffy, sugar works only rarely, most of the roses are bad, and things that are great on me are things like musks, myrrh, amber, sandalwood, hazelnut, and plum.)

  5. That awkward moment when you have 30 bottles in your bpal bottle box but you still want ONE MORE and it's because it's what you think a fictional character might wear. Namely, Kurt Hummel on Glee. Dorian. /is-ridiculous

Not ridiculous! I could totally nerd out on what Glee characters would wear! :smilenod: I don't have as much sniffing experience as most though, and most of what sticks out in my mind is LE stuff.

Santana would be in something like Smut, or maybe one of the dark leathery scents. I've never smelled Follow Me Boy but the idea seems to work.

Brittany would have to be something very candy or bubblegum-ish, or even one of the effervescent scents (airhead :P).

Quinn has to be something beautiful yet without depth or warmth. I personally think of Brides of Dracula for this, but maybe Yvaine too. Can anyone think of something that's actually GC and available still? :)

    Anyway!

Oh, I *PARTICULARLY* want to know what people think Emma Pillsbury wears. Something light, airy, sweet, very feminine, and yet, incredibly CLEAN.

  6. So what would ya'll pick for me? I'm currently a director of a child care facility, who also teaches the four year olds. I have a hard time sticking up for myself, even when I realize I'm being taken advantage of. I give people the benefit of the doubt. You're a good person until proven otherwise. And if I like you, I tend to ignore the negatives about you. I have a sweet tooth (love desserts!). I love celtic music and hearing it live (not so keen on pure traditional, but, it has it's moments). I can be friendly and outgoing if I pretend I'm someone else or if it "doesn't matter" what others think because I'll never see them again. I'm much more conservative/quiet with people I know, even slightly. Love fantasty/sci fi. My head's usually in the clouds. I'll come up with the crazy idea, but others have to figure out how to make it work/do it.

Notewise, only honey, and rose are usually vile on me, and I'm not too keen on pimeapple, jasmine or coconut.

I should give you something more RAWR to balance out your sweet demureness, but I can't help it, I feel like sweet demureness would suit you. I want to say:

Good (from the new RPG line) - Shimmering celestial musk with vanilla, white honey, acacia, and sugar cane. I can hear you fearing the honey from here... DON'T FEAR THE HONEY! Most of the Lab's honey and roses are really vile on me as well, but this one was incredibly different. A lot of people are trying these right now and will be peddling their unloved imps, so I wouldn't suggest it if it weren't easy to get ahold of. :D This scent is mildly sweet in an almost-foody-but-not type way. It's like it rides the line between foody and floral, but is just generally calm and lovely. As an added bonus, it's sort of fantasy themed? Heehee!

we are trying for a family - i really could use some fertility magic.

i change my hair fairly often and had everything from blonde to pink to black, super short, very long.

I am outspoken, spontaneous, excitable, enthusiastic, loving, caring and huggy, sometimes pottymouthed.

i used to be fun and rather loud, but now in canada i am a rather quiet observer and i feel boring.

i am worried to be perceived as rude because of being "too german".

i am not homesick but i miss my best friend and my girl-friends and their spontaneous visits.

i can be quite obsessive and when i am interested in something i can spend forever on research - i tend to deep dive.

i love industrial, wave, electronic, punk and german fun punk. i also listen to classical, I currently love Muse.

I enjoy swimming, sewing, gardening, make up, cooking and i have the feeling i might fall for BPAL.

our house is still under renovation and we do everything ourselves.

I started out as a print graphic designer, then web designer, then web developer, then PHP programmer (self-taught), then user experience designer and now i'm an information architect in a very cool advertising agency. i work mostly on facebook apps for budweiser, honda, wonderbread and johnson & johnson which is the most exciting job i had so far and that gives me a great sense of accomplishment. i am very proud of my career. the scent must work in a professional setting.

I want to say Kali for you:

Kali, the Black One, is the fearless Goddess of Destruction, Creation, Energy [in her Shakti aspect] and Dissolution. Also named Kaliratri [black Night] and Kalikamata [black Earth-Mother], she is the fiercest aspect of Devi, the supreme mother goddess. Kali is a protector Goddess, the destroyer of evil spirits and guardian of the faithful. She, along with her consort Shiva, represent the unending cycle of death and birth, sexual union, creation and destruction. Kali annihilates ignorance, maintains the natural order of the world, and blesses those who strive for spiritual awareness and knowledge of true holiness with infinite tenderness and motherly love. The constant, unending Work of Creation is called the "The Play of Kali". This perfume is a blend of the sacred blooms of cassia, hibiscus, musk rose, Himalayan wild tulip, lotus and osmanthus swirled with offertory dark chocolate, red wine, tobacco, balsam and honey.

You are busy, capable of multiple things, creating and doing new things all the time. I feel like she represents all the busy-ness without being corporate or nerdy (not that there's anything wrong with nerdy!), and also has the mother aspect for your fertility pursuits. Most people who've tried it think it's a very powerful and feminine scent at the same time. If I recall correctly, that is. I know I love it. :)

I'm 22, a Political Science major with a minor in Art. I've been described as a problem solver because I'm capable of both compromising and "waging war" as the situation calls for it. I'm often the one people go to when mediation is required. This is going to sound so pretentious, but I really do value intelligence and wit in the people around me. I utilize a lot of sarcasm and self-depreciating humor, but I have zero tolerance for being insulted by some one else. I also have a long memory and can be just a teeny weensy bit vindictive when I've been wronged. That said I much prefer to have a healthy network of connections, and thus will bend over backwards to accommodate others. Close friends have described my demeanor as "sexual, but not intimate" which I can kind of agree with, and I'm most comfortable in rural, woodsy settings.

I'm not too fond of overly flowery tones, preferring darker or fiery scents. I do best with musky, bold, and some citrus fragrances. I'm leery of cinnamon because it can smell foody or holidayish, but I was thinking of trying Chimera for my multi-tonal personality. Aelopile also seems like a good bet for me. In all, I'm really looking for a scent that people will come to attribute to me, so the more distinctive the better.

Eris comes to mind: Goddess of Strife and Discord, constant companion and sometime consort to Ares. She is a fickle, chaotic Goddess of Bedlam whose greatest passion is the sowing of dissention and turmoil. A suitably disjointed scent, bursting with gleeful mayhem: wet fruits and sharp mimosa with Martial spices and a deceptive flash of floral.

A friend of mine who is delightfully sarcastic and bitingly witty, no-nonsense and takes no crap from people, said she felt like this scent described her but in a way she didn't like. I have an imp of it and I felt like it was lovely on me, nothing sinister. I think it's worth a try for you maybe?

My life revolves around animals - and not just at home. I also work with animals for a living. I've spent countless hours devoted to hoofed mammals, but right now I am dedicated to a canine sport called Mondioring. It combines bitework, obedience, and jumping exercises into one sport.

I suppose that's a good representation of my personality: while I can exhibit exquisite control and calmness, I'm rather feral under the surface.

Most people enjoy my company but walk away having some trouble truly grasping exactly who I am. I'm not intentionally deceptive. Well, not usually.

I write (fiction, usually fantasy, drawing heavily on demonology), draw, and spend a lot of my spare time with my dogs.

I tend to stay away from overly floral/fruity/soft scents. I think my personality is a little too heavy for that sort of thing. I'm not overbearing. Just...strong. :)

Ok, Miss Lupescu was suggested for someone else earlier, but I'm really feeling it for you.

Animalic musk, with amber, patchouli, ho wood, cypress, almond blossom, golden sandalwood, and strange spices.

Ok, that's not everybody yet but I'll have to wait and post again later. This is getting huge.

  7. I am absolutely SHOCKED this hasn't been mentioned before, but Smut! I have the 2011 version, but my friend says the old one she had was very throw-y as well. A little dab from the wand, and I mean LITTLE, like a dot smaller than you would get from a pencil eraser, goes a long way!

I'm a big fan of lots of throw myself. I really like not having to use a lot of scent to get a big impact. So I guess it's kind of fitting that as I read this, I realized most of my absolute favourite scents are ones that have good-to-great throw.

    Bordello

Lilith Victoria (one of the Snake Oil scents, so I guess that's the culprit!)

    Kitsune-Tsuki

    Wezwanie/Hold

    Infernal Lover

And of course... Smut, which throws the most out of all of them, to me.

  8. This thread is a great idea! Where to start?.. I am the oldest child of four.

    <respectfully snipped>

I am an optimist. My blackest days are only gray.

I just wrote a big reply to this and somehow my browser ate it. Gah! :thud: I shall attempt to reconstruct! :)

I went on a scent journey as I read this, feeling like the feelings I get from certain scents were coming to me as I followed along.

For younger days of being aloof - The Brides of Dracula. This scent evokes a feminine beauty that isn't too emotionally involved, to me. I feel like it's good for days when one might need to shield a softer side.

For being religious - Kind of a no-brainer in regard to names, but they really do have that feel to me of church-based reverence. Cathedral and Hymn.

For being kind and mothering a darling baby girl - maybe also a little obvious, but Lilith Victoria. It's so soft and sweet and comforting. Haloes is along the same lines, and might also suit a religiousness that keeps with the sweet and kind bit too.

For old-fashioned things and intellectualism - Heavenly Love and Earthly Love. The name might seem counterintuitive, but it's a soft wood that still manages to be feminine. If you like coffee more than wood, you might try the ever-popular Miskatonic University. :)

I tried to read through the posts I've missed since I looked here last (a few months ago) and I also sort of lost track of who actually got recommendations and who didn't. I'm not nearly as well-versed in scents as some people, but I do know more about scents than I did when I myself originally posted last year, and I actually enjoy trying to figure people out and match them up. :smilenod:

  9. Ok well this should be interesting, i don't find describing my self at all easy but i will try!

I am 24 years old photographer, strictly darkroom, i am a great printer and printed professionally for 6 years but i am going back to school with scholarships to pursue my own work more thoroughly. I shoot iconic American images, a bit gritty, generally focusing on ordinary life, i am generally detached from my images, although the personal factor is that i am strictly grounded on the non-exotic.

I have a great love films in particular some directors i adore are ingmar bergman, fassbinder, early werner herzog, eric rohmer, david cronenburg, mike leigh, bella tarr, andrei tarkovsky, and david lynch (and many many many more) i collect films and i prefer the heady or psychological film that focus on human interactions, emotions, torture and relationships.

I love beer. I am a vegetarian. most of my friends are male. i am incredibly sexual. i date and live with an insane painter. I openly discuss extremely sexual acts. I over examine absolutely everything in life, yet i don't take life or society too seriously. I've been often referred to as a deviant, libertine, old fashioned or a hedonist. I am into cats, i work at lush, i am a lush, completely over indulgent and frivolous with my money. I am incredibly good to my close friends but only have a few. Too blatantly blunt and honest at times...

My favorite musicians are tom waits, nick cave, leadbelly, woody guthrie, nina simone, and elliott smith, but i am into all music and have a large vinyl collection and a million cds and i am anti-i-pod.

I am a regular at an old baltimore tavern that caters to the strangest people you can imagine but once you are in, it is as good as cheers.

Physically, i am brown hair, brown eyed, i wear cat eyes liquid liner and red lipstick and i have a beauty mark on my cheek. i am average-curvy in size. I have 1950's decorative cat eye glasses in which i wear when i have to read or am in school.

Lets see what this brings in!... thanks for reading :)

I would say try Libertine but I don't actually get a "libertine" vibe from Libertine. Do love the name though!

I'm thinking something with tobacco and/or booze in it for you. I haven't smelled either of these but going off of notes and generally saucy theme, maybe:

Perversion - Smoky rum and black tobacco with a whisper of steamy leather with a splash of crystalline chardonnay, layered over a sensual, sweet, and deceptively magnetic base of tonka.

    or even maybe

Wanda is the breathtakingly beautiful sable-wrapped marble queen of Sacher-Masoch's fantasies. Her scent is a deep red merlot with a faint hint of leather, sexual musk and body heat over crushed roses, violets and myrtle.

  10. I had the exact same experience that Dymphna did. So much that I hesitated even writing about it, but I guess it will be a helpful review even to say that this can happen to more than one person, right?

In the imp, maraschino cherries! Was so excited I gave my boyfriend a whiff and he said it smelled like fake cherries. I got indignant and huffed, "The LAB does NOT use anything synthetic!"

I put it on and I too wanted a cherry Italian ice. But that's not so different from any other minute of my life. Anyway, it was still juicy and fruity with beautiful, full, lush cherry goodness. I waited a few moments as it dried, and I sniffed again, and detected the wood somewhere hiding beneath the juicy cherry. I then exclaimed "There's WOOD under there!" and was met with another funny look.

I was very excited about the wood smell. I have not yet met a woody BPAL scent I didn't like. (I haven't smelled a ton of them I guess, but I'm thinking of Heavenly Love and Earthly Love, which is such lovely wood on me that I call it Heavenly Wood and Earthly Wood, even though I feel thematically like the wood is the "earthly" part and the other notes form the "heavenly" part. But I digress.) I had already noticed the throw wasn't very strong, but then just as the Red Queen was warming up to the wood, it disappeared.

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that about her in the story too. Loud and in your face, and then disappearing quickly. Sadness!

I only have a half-imp of this anyway, so I will definitely hang onto it and try again. With all the scents that smell outright BAD on me, one that smells good but just disappears is worth waiting for.

  11. Oooh! This looks fun! I tried to answer the previous questions but I don't seem to be very good at it :/

I'm kind of a serious person yet whimsical in a quiet way and love to laugh. I've always had a way with words (I'm a writer) and read horror and fantasy. Drawing comes naturally to me as well. I sang for a few years but didn't like being the center of attention. Anything supernatural or mysterious draws me including folklore, astrology, magic, theology, unexplored nature and unsolved mysteries. I have an affinity to all animals but especially birds. Halloween is my favorite holiday and I love pumpkins and Autumn. I practice martial arts, yoga and belly dance. Though I'm not a complete vegetarian, I don't eat poultry or red meat. I love things that have intricate textures and rich colors.

I'm tall with long dark brown hair, pale skin and slightly slanted eyes.

Any thoughts as to what scent I would be?

I haven't smelled a lot of scents yet, or have much familiarity with the ones I have smelled, but I'm sure there has to be a perfect scent that embodies a mystical, mysterious spirit like that. :) Between the mysterious and the autumn smell, I'm going to say 13. ...And crud, I just realized every 13 is different! Haha, okay, I'm talking about 13 from June 2008. Which doesn't help much I guess! I had one once, but traded it away for I think Beltane 2008, which I liked even less, but used on Beltanes as part of the celebration at least. I imagine you'll get lots of good 'Weenie recommendations.

  12. Well, Cordelia had already been one of my favorites, so that one was pretty spot-on. Wilde I really enjoy, but it goes a little weird on me after an hour or so (I got a used imp, though, so I'm considering getting a lab fresh one to find out if it's any different). And Saint-Germain is fabulous, though I keep forgetting how much I like it.

I'm still on the hunt for my ideal nerdy librarian scent, if anyone has any more recs. :)

If you like woody smells at all, and I feel like that sort of matches libraries, I'd try either Anubis or Heavenly Love and Earthly Love. Might be a bit difficult to get ahold of the latter, depending on your location. I'm still fairly new to figuring out scents and notes and stuff too, so those are my best guesses for now!

If you don't like wood, maybe a soft, delicate but not overly girly-floral scent would be Eden or Queen.

:blush2: I would like to play too, if I may? I have found a few smells I like, but I don't know if I felt that any of them represented ME. So here goes:

I work at a library but even though I adore books, I don't always identify as the "librarian" type. When I was a young teenager I thought I'd be a novelist and then I went through phases of wanting to be a screenwriter, a professional bellydancer, a veterinarian, a professional seamstress, and now I think I've finally decided with seriousness that I want to study psychology. I don't want to birth children, I'd rather help ones that already exist. I want to travel to other countries to both learn and teach. Both of my parents are deceased so I have I'm very adamant about principles, especially of justice and fairness. For this reason and lots of others I'm a pretty strong feminist. I love creating things and have tried or plan to try most of the types of crafts I can think of. My Venus in Taurus also has me loving soft things, shiny things, and good-smelling things of all types.

As strongly as I feel about things, I'm also really fun-loving and embrace adventure whenever possible. It's been difficult recently due to LOTS of financial oppression, but I'm going to college again (after a bit away) in the fall and look forward to blossoming a bit more. I'm an Aries sun/Pisces moon/Leo rising so as confident and go-getting as I feel I should be, I'm often sort of insecure and end up daydreaming about being as confident and go-getting as I should be. :blush2: I have only been in the state I live in a few years and have been rather stuffed under a rock so I'm always trying to figure out how to make friends.

Oh, and I talk too much. That much is obvious though. :)

  13. I don't know if it has something to do with the fact that this scent has obviously aged by now, or what, but my description is nothing like any of the lovely things I read about this when it was new!

I want to trade skins with half the people up this thread, because the idea of strawberries and sugar, or the toasted caramel-y topping on flan or creme brulee is something I want to wallow in and drench myself!

But alas, I just get soapy fruitcake. :( :( :(

I smelled it in the bottle, and I got that boozy impression someone else did. Like when I was excited about 13 and finally got it and it ended up being a boozy, sticky, spicy-in-a-bad-way mess. I already assumed I wouldn't like it, but come on, it's called SUGAR MOON! I love sugar! I love the moon!

I put it on, and it was still boozy, but I was still suspending disbelief and generously tossing around huge handfuls of The Benefit of the Doubt . In the meantime, someone was taking the booze and the sticky sweet spice-goo and mixing it up in a big bowl. My skin was the oven and here was fruitcake, only nothing like Fruitcake, which oddly enough on me actually does smell good. But someone must have gotten reeeeeeeeally distracted with the booze, because somehow soap got into my fruitcake. :(

Now it's later, and it's even weirder, because everybody ate all the fruitcake and then washed out the pan with copious amounts of MORE SOAP.

I am so sad! I could be one of those people eating sugared strawberries in a springtime field, but instead I've got an empty bottle of booze and some really CLEAN cake pans...

  14. I am new to the scent describing thing and don't feel like I can add anything that hasn't already been said. I'm not even sure I can pick out which note is myrrh and which is the storax or balsam either, but on me this is very resiny/woody and sweet in a pleasant way. I am also joining the millions who said it smells "golden". I don't feel like it's death or decay related, at least it doesn't give me that impression at all. I do get the temple feeling from it, and sometimes also "crazy magical wood". Haha, that was my favourite description. :)

I think it's delicious, and seeing as I only have an imp, I will have to start collecting this very soon, because the reviewer who mentioned "anointing" herself with it was also dead on for me, and I would like to anoint in the way the Eqyptians did, frequently and with plenty of it!

(I love the smell so much I wrote 82 run-ons! WHEEEEEEE!)
