    On Darkness

Despite the notes, on me, this smells like it should be some creamy hot drink served at some upscale coffeehouse. Not coffee or chocolate, obviously, but, if someone served me something steaming in a hot mug that smelled like this? I'd drink it. Seriously. This is seriously delish, and I am absolutely kicking myself for not getting some last year. Why? WHY did I wait? *sob* *deep sniff of arm* *sigh* I am really serious in that without the list of notes given I would have been totally off the wall and guessing things like vanilla, honey and steamed foamed milk. The lavender I might possibly have gotten...maybe. Then I would have been completely stumped, since I couldn't possibly want to drink something with rosewood or geranium in it, could I? I amp roses, normally, and I am getting no rose whatsoever from this. This is not a floral on me. This made me thirsty and I had to go make myself cocoa to take the place of the mysterious hot drink that I wasn't going to be getting because the drink does not exist.* How did I get a foodie scent from this list of notes? I am completely confused. Happy, but, confused. I may need more bottles. * I have it. I need a London Fog Latte. This is why I must be thinking of a drink. There's no tea in this, but, there's Lavender in that drink...and maybe the Bergamot in the Earl Grey tea and the Geranium in this are close enough for my nose to confuse them. Beyond that I have no idea, except that it feels creamy and warm.

    The Season of Ghosts

Citrussy, cheery, happy, with an undercurrent of almost floral sweetness. As it warms on my skin, the resin comes forward and I can also smell the tang of the geranium. It's smoothing out and becoming less...perky? It's still a very happy, lively scent. Frankincense and citrus, with a bit of geranium. I think this may go into my regular rotation of scents.

    Gacela of the Dark Death

I'm happy to try anything at all if it has Terebinth pine in it. The Clove was a bonus. I am happy to report that this scent is everything that I wanted it to be. Spicy pine and clove, blended together. There really isn't anything else to say, I suppose, except that even with only a very few notes, it hits the complicated deep, spicy area that I love so very much. It probably helps that pine and cloves are two scents that just about define my Christmas memories. If you distilled all the good stuff around Christmas down to just two scents(which would be awfully, terribly hard to do. I'm so bad at editing down.), then these would be it, because together they seem to add up to much more. I don't need to have the cinnamon and oranges, the candy canes, or the wrapping paper added into it. The clove and the pine summon their spirits and they are suddenly there anyway.

    Diable en BoƮte

It starts out sharp and almost menacing. Dry it becomes a dark complicated spicy/woody scent, barely sweetened by the peach blossom and the currant. The far dry down is lovely and rich with redwood, tonka and peach blossom. This should improve with a bit of age. The sharpness at the beginning is a little intimidating, and a wee bit of mellowing would probably make me love it more. It's still a complicated wood and spice scent, and I am happy to have it.

    Now Winter Nights Enlarge

My skin is slightly unusual, in that caramel usually doesn't last on me. It vanishes. On me, I can smell the caramel for about the first 15 minutes, and then it becomes a slightly sweet memory behind all the spices. Yes, that's right. I can sort of smell the red musk. I hardly get any flowers whatsoever. On me, this is nutmeg, and patchouli doing a really decent imitation of the March Friday the 13th scent. I really like it, much like I really liked the March 13. However, as foody as it is on me, I can't justify a second bottle. I don't tend to reach for the foody ones to wear as often.

But Men Loved Darkness Rather Than Light

Yum. I have so many blends with myrrh, patchouli, vanilla...this is nothing like any of them. Nothing. Like. Any. Of. Them. Complex, bitter, dark, spicy and sweet. I suppose I am surprised at the sweetness. I have nothing to compare this to. It is itself.

    Trevor Bruttenholm

My husband is rewatching Buffy the Vampire slayer episodes. He's going through a LOT of them in a row as he is not well and can't do much else. So, I am rewatching lots of episodes as well. I always did love to watch Anthony Stewart Head. This scent is what Giles would smell like. This is the scent of a sexy librarian with a library of arcane books and a past with dark magical secrets. I really really like this scent. It wasn't in my original Hellboy order, but, I tried a bit on at a Will-Call, and then I had to have a bottle.

    Liz

I got no smoke, and the vanilla floral perfume was faintly present at first and then faded. Mostly what I smell is buttery soft suede, like a cuddly blanket that's all fleece on one side and suede on the other. I have a fake fur blanket that is exactly that, made to look like fleece and suede, but better because it is softer and machine washable. I was wearing Liz, and wrapped in the blanket, and thinking that the blanket should smell like that. Probably as it ages the vanilla will be more present on me, but, I expect I will still like it and consider it cuddly.

    Pa-Pow

This started off all grassy and I was worried, because I really have enough green grassy scents(2 is more than enough for me). Then I went off and did something else for 15 minutes or so, and when I sniffed the spot again, the grass was gone...or morphed. Or, rather I can still smell the grass on the spot on my upper arm, but, on the back of my hand all I smell is sunlight and clean fur. It isn't a strong scent, but, it's a clean skin scent. Fresh, happy, and clean.

    Peach Moon

Peach blossom...not peach fruity, but peach petals...with a hint of the chrysanthemums and tea. If I sniff and try really hard I can detect the musk and jasmine. I think this will age nicely, with the musk, which is good because it makes me think of pastel colored summer sundresses and picnics. This isn't a fall scent for me.

    The Black Temple Burlesque Troupe

Whoah. Not what I was expecting.... I expect I will be trying this more than just this once, partly because I really wasn't expecting a package today, so I was already wearing another scent. This one I'll have to try again solo. The oil went on dark...and a little sticky. Feral is a good description of the musk. It's sweetened by the cacao, but, no where anywhere close to foody. This isn't the softer tobacco that I am accustomed to either. This scent comes out swinging. I think it's going to soften up...in a while? Maybe? Right now, though this is one bunch of very ...assertive... dancing girls.

    The Illustrated Woman

So. Why did I wait so long to order some of this? This is wonderful. The pine is fantastic. It's lasting a loooong time. This is beautiful and golden and resiny without being just like all the other resins I own and love. The interesting thing is that the scent is more pine on my arms, and more of all the rest of the notes on the back of my hands. On my hands the skin musk, smoky vanilla, patchouli, Indian resins, golden honey, tobacco and the pine all blend into this splendid sweet golden whole. On my arms, it is more pine with just a background of the other notes. Why did I wait so long?

    Vasilissa

On wet, very sweet, and very girly. I'm hoping a bit of aging will bring the musks and resins forward more. Actually, even the first few minutes bring the musks and resins forward more. In our neighboorhood, people plant star jasmine, and I like it...in the neighbors yards. It gets a little powerful if it is right under your own window. I do like the smell, though. Neither this nor The Girl really captured that scent. This isn't really there yet. I'll try it again after a while.

    The Lights of Men's Lives

Sweet beeswax, with a faint hint of something like the flowers the bees were harvesting from. There's the very faintest hint of flowers behind the wax. I don't know, but, there could be skin musk or something in addition. It is possible that there could be vanilla, and if there is, a little aging and time will reveal it. My skin loves vanilla above most things. I don't get any smoke, at ALL. Hanerot Halalu was smokier, and those bees were harvesting from a different flower. I'll be in the minority and say I like Hanerot Halalu better, because I like smoke, and I also enjoy darker scents. This is light and bright, with no flickering shadows anywhere. However, this is a good substitute if you can't get that.

    The Black Rider

This has quite a bit of throw. It starts off Leather, with no messing around with that cologney smell I sometimes get at the start of many many MANY leather blends. The oppoponax and the tobacco do eventually get through. Amber takes a good bit of aging before it really is noticable on me, so I'll expect it to show up next spring. Even though resins love my skin, this is a LEATHER scent. I wore this today to work, and got a compliment from someone who knows my perfume habit. She sniffed the air and said, "I like that one!" It does have some throw.

    The Little Wooden Doll

I get sawdust at first...but it's wonderful sawdust. It's that fantastic scent found in a busy inspired workshop using good woods, rather than scrap and plywood. For me, sandalwood seems to be the magic wood that makes rose behave. Rose is iffy on me. It can amp. However so many LE scents that I wanted lately have had only rose as the note of doom...and also had sandalwood, and they worked, somehow. Therefore I had to try this one too. It works. It's a sweet purehearted rose married to the smell of an industrious creative woodshop. I don't know yet how often I will reach for it to wear it, but, I like it.

    Raven Moon

With all the resins and vanilla, I was sort of expecting a warm scent. What I got was the scent of dark feathers and cold iron. It's really really evocative, and perfect for the name. It's a mournful, dark, slightly cold, and metallic scent. Given the list of ingredients, it will probably change as it ages for me. Most probably it will get warmer and sweeter as the vanilla and myrrh develop, but right now? This is a cold metallic scent that may be my rainy day scent that I could never quite find;water notes don't often *quite* work on my skin, so finding a cool rain on cement scent is probably out. I think this works well as an alternative, though. If it does eventually turn into a warm spicy resin, I won't be heartbroken, though, as I love those as a rule. ~Edit~ about 4 hours in the scent did change over to a warm, spicy resin and vanilla scent, and it is fabulous. It's still sort of feathery. I like the way the scent starts and how it changes on me. I liked Falling leaf Moon, but I LOVE Raven Moon.

    Cake Smash

It dries down to cream cheese frosting, vanilla and spices on me. It also has tremendous staying power. I can smell the snake oil, but, not the Dorian, yet. Maybe as it ages, and this should definitely age well.

    Theodosius, The Legerdemain

I tested this today with no access to the scent notes. At first i thought I smelled grapefruit, which confused me. I didn't recall any citrus listed. However, once it was on a while I began to smell vanilla. Sniffing the skin where I applied it I was smelling something comlex and herbal...almost medicinal. However, wafting around me was a wonderful musky vanilla.

    Falling Leaf Moon

I tried this at Will Call and had doubts. The rain note was not really behaving on me. However, I had already ordered a bottle unsniffed, and this week it arrived. I don't smell as much rain in it, and I like it so very much more. This is all leaves and resins, this time. The leaves could be maple and apple tree leaves, because a close sniff gives me the impression of cider, though apples and cider are not listed. It smells a bit like a huge pile of clean leaves, the sort of clean leaves you'd have no trouble jumping into a huge pile of just for fun. Then you go inside, still smelling of leaves, and make cider as a reward for the work of raking up the yard. It lasts and lasts and lasts on me. Plus, it just gets better, as the resin and leaves that I like best in it, are apparently also what like my skin the best. I put this on yesterday early morning before work, and I can still smell it on my skin now, the next morning.

    Countess Dolingen of Gratz

I got a little bit of the cypress at first, but, mostly this was not-quite-water and ozone. I didn't get olibanum, unless that was the note that was causing it to last and last and last... I like the smell of real rain, why didn't I like this?

    St. John's Eve

Mostly I got this because of the frankincense and myrrh. I do love resins. Mmmmm. On, this is smoke. Rich, intense, bonfire smoke. This is a fire that was built to burn, not cook. This isn't a pretty candle on a table or a back yard barbeque or even something at the beach to roast marshmallows over. It isn't pretty fireworks way up high to ooh and aaah over...or even surreptitious sparklers or fireworks that go bang or shriek. This is a fire as EVENT. This is bonfire as tradition and test of courage. I can definitely imagine smelling like this after jumping through a bonfire.

    Lord Ruthven

It took a while before I could really stand to sniff it. It started off COLOGNE. It dries down, after an hour or so, to leather and cologne. It seems nice, but, more of a clean, manly guy smell than something I want to smell of myself.

    Cristina

I haven't found any flowers in this yet. On me, this is almost all chestnut, with resin and musk in the far background. The chestnut is verging on foody...but always seems to stop short because of a very slight woody scent. It is also lasting pretty well on me at 6 hours, and still going strong. That's pretty much the wear I'd expect on me from anything with trees, resin and musk in the notes, though.

    Tweedledee

Wet, it is bright, slightly astringent in a good way, and very peppy. I feel a good deal more awake after sniffing this, and that's good since I was having a very slow start this morning. Drying, the kumquat fades quite a bit, but, it's still a peppy, very awake scent. This was a good one to stumble upon this morning!
