This is the first Bards of Ireland scent I’ve tried. It makes me want to try them all. On first sniff, I sighed, “Aah, ambergris!” So soft and warm, and when it’s combined with honey…oh my god, it’s heaven. Luxurious and rich. I am so surprised that the citrus of the bergamot and neroli isn’t overpowering as usual. In fact, I’m not even noticing it. Same goes for the other notes that usually make me say, “hmm, can I wear this?” – orris root and oakmoss. They’re blissfully absent, and I’m floating on a little cloud of ambergris, honey, and a little black musk – just lovely.

This smells like a super-sweet, artificially flavored fruity kids’ drink. Like a neon green Gatorade or something. But in a good way! It’s a surprisingly happy scent, all sweet and fruity (in a tropical, pineapple-y way, from the davana), and then there’s more sweetness and a little warmth from the musk and amber. I’d love to smell a single note green musk so I can see how it differs from other musks. I think I really like green musk. This isn’t the style of scent that I typically go for, but I’m thinking about a bottle…

The grassy, sunny hay absolute note is recognizable from Needle in a Haystack. It’s so fresh and summery, and the honey adds a touch of sweetness that complements it nicely. I can also smell a little bit of wheat. No cardamom here, and I’m not sure what mallow smells like. This is like summer in a bottle, it really has the ability to lift your spirits on a cold and gloomy day.

A musky citrus/fruit cologne… mandarin and blackcurrant are the standout notes and they are very nice with the warm musk. I thought it would be much darker and creepier. The tea leaf is also noticeable, adding a refined softness. No mint at all, which I’m happy about. Not a typical male cologne but would probably smell quite nice on a man. Glad I got around to trying it.

Somehow, the combination of resins in this blend have combined to smell like…Coca Cola! Who knew that was an appropriate gift for the Christ child? Seriously, I can’t think of another comparison…it’s making me a little thirsty. After a few minutes, there is some spiciness coming out, from the coriander and cumin. Then it turns a little creamy, from the ambergris and vanilla. Now it’s like a Coke float. Sparkly, effervescent, heavy on the frankincense -- a must-have for resin lovers.

In spite of the lovely bourbon vanilla which makes every floral blend more beautiful, Peitho isn’t really my style. A strong jasmine note is too sharp and spicy for me. It’s wearable here, thanks to the creamy bourbon vanilla that smoothes it out a little. The jasmine is still very powerful, however. If you can’t wear jasmine or only like a little hint of jasmine, I would not recommend Peitho for you. There’s another floral note besides the jasmine that I can’t identify – myrtle, I guess. But it’s weak compared to Queen Jasmine.

I can really smell that dry orris note first thing. I’m usually not a fan of it, but it’s nicely tempered here by the soft, creamy bourbon vanilla. I am not really picking up on the patchouli. To me, it’s a dry floral scent with tons of vanilla, and then a little bit of sandalwood. Reminds me somewhat of Antique Lace. Kind of old-fashioned and ladylike, very pretty and sweet.

I’ve never had a butter rum cookie. I’ve had regular butter cookies, and there’s some of that incredibly rich, buttery sweetness here, but it’s overpowered by a strong, sharp, and slightly medicinal boozy note. These cookies must pack a serious alcoholic punch! Then there’s the almond, which lingers in the background. I don’t smell the orange zest. A pleasant foody scent for fans of baked goods, which I am, but this isn’t my all-time favorite in that category. The rum a little too strong for my taste.

This is a very close relative to Samhain, with that gorgeous “autumn leaves” note, but it lacks Samhain’s foodiness. It’s almost entirely autumn leaves, with a hint of patchouli that gives it some depth. I was right to order a bottle unsniffed -- I’ll take all the autumn scents I can get my hands on, especially when they’re as pretty as Falling Leaf Moon!

The spicy pumpkin note is balanced here by astringent fir needles and the wonderful, clean, summery scent of tomatoes on the vine. These notes don’t really “go together” in my mind…a pumpkin pie in a tomato garden in a forest? But it makes for an interesting perfume. I hope BPAL someday releases a scent that is just ripe tomatoes, because it’s an awesome note.

This smells like a light caramel – heavy on the sugar and vanilla, light on the butter – that’s cooking on the stovetop until it gets bubbly and a little bit scorched. I love the candy sweetness, but the burned, smoky aspect is what keeps me coming back for another sniff. It’s almost like a super sweet, foody incense. Want a bottle.

Reminds me of last year’s To Autumn, with that same mouthwatering combination of apples and hazelnuts. But Pomona is very fruity, and only a little nutty. The sweet fruitiness of apple is complemented by berry and pomegranate notes, and the hazelnut provides a somewhat bitter contrast to the fruits. It’s really nice, but it fades quickly, as others have noted.

On me this is super woodsy, like pencil shavings or tree bark, with flourishes of citrus (the spikenard, I’m assuming) and unidentified fruit (grape, maybe?). I don’t smell any almond or cinnamon, none at all, to be honest. It doesn’t make me want to run out and buy a bottle or anything, but I always enjoy a nice woodsy scent, so I’m glad to have tried it. -
A soft and dreamy blend of florals and resins. The sweet benzoin and woody petitgrain combine beautifully with the gentle patchouli and subtle rose. There’s something organic and natural about this scent…outdoorsy, without being herbal or vegetable-like. Makes me think of lying on a blanket in a rose garden, daydreaming.

My favorite of this year’s pumpkin patch, it smells just like a pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks. This is a lovely pumpkin note, spicy rather than buttery, and the coffee note is rich and strong. Even though I rarely drink coffee, I love BPAL coffee blends for some reason! I can’t really detect any of the other notes listed, but the pumpkin and coffee are enough for me to love it.

This is a subtler pumpkin note than I’m accustomed to. It’s spicy, but not overly buttery like some pumpkin blends I’ve sampled. I’m not really noticing the musk or honey. It’s like 50% pumpkin, 50% almond. These two notes make a nice, foody pairing. Like if you went to a really great dinner party around Halloween. You walk in and the house smells like the host has been baking all day. Pumpkin pies, almond tarts, and other baked goods are set out on the table, fresh out of the oven. That’s what this conjures up in my imagination.

I’ve never had the pleasure of eating a croquembouche, so I can’t make that comparison, but what I get from this is some kind of fresh, warm baked good, topped with candied toasted almonds and a little bit of poppy seed. (There’s no poppy seed in the description, but well, that’s what my nose is telling me.) The almond note is really nice and creamy. The pastry note is yeasty rather than buttery. I’d like it better if it was buttery. It’s pleasant, but it’s not making me drool.

I’ve never smelled black cherry brandy, but I recognize the brandy note from Grand Guignol. At first, the black cherry note is very strong and reminds me of cherry Kool-Aid, but it mellows out after a few minutes. There’s also something vaguely waxy about Suck It...like wax fangs. Not sure what that's all about. Ten minutes on, it’s subtly fruity and not noticeably boozy -- a fun, cheerful cherry scent.

i know this is supposed to be vetiver and florals, but i swear my imp smells like vetiver and cigarette smoke! as a former smoker who still enjoys the aroma of secondhand smoke at times, that is not a bad thing, although it does make me think twice about wearing this oil out of the house! there’s also a faint whiff of leather in the background, but the vetiver is the main event here (that happens to me often with vetiver scents, my skin must amp it). i think this will smell good on my husband. i’m not picking up any floral notes. it seems like a really dark, sexy masculine blend.

when first applied, this is too strong for my taste. the sandalwood is so heavy. soon, it mellows out somewhat (although still quite strong). the spicy dragon’s blood resin paired with the dry sandalwood shavings results in a scent that is bold, fierce and powerful, like something a warrior would wear into battle!

like roses mixed with lots of dark green stems, leaves and thorns. not a true rose note, but something in the same family. it’s a rich, warm, powdery floral, balanced by herbal greenery. i would enjoy a lotion or soap with this scent. it’s feminine and sexy, but also clean and understated.

for jasmine lovers only! i find that a lot of the lab’s earlier jasmine blends don’t smell that great on me. i don’t know why i have better luck with newer ones. nyx is pretty much all jasmine on me, and kind of smells like nail polish remover. the myrrh and rose are noticeable but faint. it’s giving me a headache after only a couple minutes. sorry, nyx, but it’s off to the swaps pile for you.

This is sort of like Centzon Totochtin plus wine and cinnamon. The rich cocoa pairs so beautifully with the fruity, sweet wine and the powdery kick of cinnamon. I’ve never had Mexican hot chocolate, but now I would like to! I’m so glad I got a bottle of this before it went away. I wasn’t sure I needed it because I have bottles of Centzon and El Dia de Reyes, but this scent shines as its own unique creation. Love it.

cold vanilla ice cream melting over a big slice of hot apple pie right out of the oven. the tartness of the apples is matched perfectly by the creaminess of the milk, and there’s just the right amount of spices to give it a little kick. gentler and less spicy than Fearful Pleasure, and so perfect for autumn. makes me nostalgic for trips to the cider mill, bringing home bushels of apples and baking them into mouth-watering desserts. scrumptious!

Honey, cream, and a touch of powder. Reminds me of the Burt’s Bees honey-scented body butter that I use regularly. A gentle, milky scent, soft but not faint. It makes me think of babies, too, as other reviewers have noted. It’s pure, sweet, innocent. My husband likes it on me. Glad I picked up a bottle – I think it will get a lot of love.
