    Sheol

The final burst of the soul’s light and joy before passing into the depths of the earth, and into the cords of Sheol; Sheol, who is never satisfied, and who makes wide her soul to all. Vibrant gladiola, graceful stargazer lily, triumphant iris and bright heliotrope flare, and is finally made somber by heavy copal, a drop of labdanum, and tonka. in the imp: i honestly don't know what i'm smelling, besides saying it's "sweet" and "dark" wet on skin: same, with some old-lady-perfume florals getting in the mix. dry down: it's all rich florals now, much like my grandmother's sisters wear. in all: to use something my friend murphy would say, it's like a thousand old ladies have been distilled into this one little bottle. now, i am not much of a floral fan, i am VERY picky about what i like in that regard. but that's what i have to say about this one. if you, however ARE a floral lover, try it and you may fall in love.

    R'lyeh

in the imp: a deep aquatic note. actually reminds me a little of the Kama Sutra "sea bath". not a bad thing! wet on skin: same- sweet, deep "blue" and very aqua. dry down: same! in all: although i have *never* been a fan of any aqua scent, this one is quite appealing! i would call this a Single Note, it's so pure in what it is. and if i, as a person who normally HATES aqua is finding it to be quite lovely, then all of you who LIKE aqua are going to be head-over-heels for this one. stock up!

    Mad Hatter

in the imp: the sweet mint of pennyroyal coupled with that lavender-citron cologne from the description. nice! wet on skin: more of the same, with the pennyroyal becoming a bit more spicy at this stage. dry down: same. in all: with moderate throw and a finish that is very much like it's start, this oil is a little complex, gentle enough for daytime wear and without gender. however, being a bit mad myself, i'm not sure it really encapsulates it's namesake as much as i would like. Freakshow is more how i imagined Mad Hater to be. still, it's quite lovely, and worth a try.

    Anne Bonny

in the imp: although not on the list, all i smell is sweet, smoky vetiver. hmmm wet on skin: more of the same! dry down: that vetiver, scent i was catching has totally left the building. in it's place is a citrus-toned frankincense and not much else. in all: while not a "bad" scent, this one just isn't very exciting to/on me. there are so many other BPALs that bowl me over with their gloriousness that it just doesn't seem worth it to waste me time with this one. still, if you adore frankincense, by all means, give this a shot- maybe it'll make your dreams come true.

    Antique Lace

in the imp: vanilla, linen, white musk wet on skin: more of the same, with a *very* subtle scent of those dried flowers underneith. dry down: sweet, soft, beautiful mix of the above, but all well blended, swirling about each other. in all: a friend and i agreed that this is the scent of going to see a friendly grandma. the soft, almost powdery flowers sitting in a parlor full of sunshine coming through delicately crocheted curtains. warm, nostalgic and beautiful. i'm am SO getting a large bottle of this ASAP! :D

    Gelt

in the bottle: like powdered hot cocoa mix! wet on skin: same, but with a touch of amber peeking through. dry down: super delicious, super rich powdered cocoa and a warm streak of amber running through. in all: if Brittish "Crunchie" bars were a scent, i imagine they would smell something very akin to this. far better than any Gelt i received as a child, this cocoa lasts and is backed by a warm golden amber that suits it just perfectly. total keeper!

    Hanerot Halalu

in the bottle: beeswax candles, with all their sweetness. wet on skin: a touch of orange as others have mentioned and more of that beautiful beeswax. like fresh honeycomb, from the hive. dry down: orange and beeswax and honey. in all: although it's got food notes, i don't know that i would classify this as a foodie oil. instead there's something that feels sacred about this scent, like something that i would indeed wear if i still went to temple. this scent is just as suitable, however, to any sacred space.

    Butter Rum Cookie

in the bottle: rummy almond cookies! wet on skin: spiced cookies with frosting. dry down: holiday cookies at their *absolute* finest. in all: when i tried Sugar Cookie for the first time, i thought it was going to be more like this. it wasn't, but that doesn't matter because it's clear to me now that this is the Cookie Scent i've been looking for all my life!

    Sugar Cookie

this is for the 2008 release. in the bottle: butter and sugar in a bottle. nomnomnom wet on skin: the above, but with dough added in. dry down: almost pure sugar with a hint of raw dough. in all: although i'm sad that the initial butter note has vanished, this is a fine all purpose foodie oil. i will go so far to get a back up bottle, because of the potential to mix this scent with others, and also because i hope it will age and become better later on.

    Needle in a Haystack

in the imp: lemony hay absolute, and not much else. wet on skin: the pumpkin is picking up a bit and yes, i'm getting that "tang" of metal. weird! dry down: the metal has become the strongest note. but i like it! close on it's heels is the lemon-heavy hay absolute. it's a beautiful combination to be sure. in all: as a metalsmith, i've actually always shied away from the perfumes with metallic notes. Needle has given me pause. and also begs the question: when are you guys putting this out in a 5mL bottle?!?

    Pumpkin V (2008)

in the bottle: strawberry Twizzlers eaten next to some cherry incense! wet on skin: slightly less artificial now, the berry scents are hanging back a bit and the pumpkin is creeping forward. dry down: very sweet, the fruits in this almost totally overpower the pumpkin. and the florals? i don't get ANY hint of them, not one trace. in all: a bit more "kid like" than i generally wear, it reminds me strongly of Strawberry Moon, which i love. so i'm going to age this for a while and try later- it might be a good option for when i want that Moon but don't want to use up what precious little i have.

    Pumpkin IV (2008)

in the bottle: pumpkin, cedar, pine and vanilla. it's reminding me somewhat of Hearth from 2005, that mix of "christmas" smells and sweet food smells. wet on skin: blissfully, the cedar has left the building, as it generally becomes pure hamster cage on me. now the scent has become a yummy but very mellow pumpkin spice. like a scratch n sniff of pumpkin pie! dry down: super. delicious. pumpkin. pie. in all: flakey crust included, this is the Pumpkin scent every BPAL foodie has been waiting for. get it while you can- this is a total keeper!

    Pumpkin III (2008)

in the bottle: YUM! mint and lime! wet on skin: more of the same. i smell like a mojito! dry down: lime, butter, pumpkin and mint, in that order. in all: like a slightly stronger version of Tarot:The Star, this Pumpkin possesses a wonderful mix between mint and lime at one end and the sweet buttery foodie pumpkin at the other. they don't exactly "mix" to form one solid thing. instead, they are all present, side by side, sharing the spotlight and making for an odd-but awesome-scent.

    Pumpkin II (2008)

in the bottle: LEATHER! (oh, and a bit of something sweet that might be pumpkin ) wet on skin: more leather, with a trace of other sweeter, lighter unknowable things underneith. dry down: wow. it's blended into a gorgeous mix of leather, myrrh and pumpkin. it's seamless, no one note any stronger than any others. beautiful. in all: i've never found a blend with leather in it that has worked on me before this one. but this is really wonderful- not too strong but with a decent throw, i could see wearing this out with friends, but also on christmas day with visiting family. interesting, unique and versatile, i'm really glad i have a bottle of Pumpkin II!

    Pumpkin I (2008)

in the bottle: buttery, fruity pie. wet on skin: the mango is top, with persimmon following as a close second. that's buttery pie crust lingers deliciously, though! dry down: the fruit settles in with the pumpkin and butter rising to the top. nomnomnom in all: a very light pumpkin bland, which i'm rather excited about. in the end, it becomes almost pure pumpkin with yummy undertones of fruit in passing. i have a feeling this is going to age very, very well.

    Death Adder

Snake Oil with vetiver, black coconut, vanilla, and opoponax. in the bottle: Snake Oil and vetiver. smoky! wet on skin: more of the same- it's interesting how the vetiver and the SO are keeping each other balanced- the lovely Snake often overpowers whatever it's mixed with. dry down: vanilla and Snake Oil, with the vetiver keeping everything in balance. in all: while not what i expected from this blend, i am unbelievably thrilled with the result. and knowing how Snake Oil ages so fantastically, i think i'll likely get a back up bottle to have later, when it gets even better!

    Graveyard Dirt

this is for the 2008 batch. in the bottle: very. moldy. dirt. wet on skin: yep- that's moldy dirt, alright! dry down: ok, the mold part has toned down a bit (whew!) and it's become more straight up rich black soil, like freshly tilled in a midnight summer garden. that's the kind of rich i'm speaking of. beautiful! in all: more of a "single note" in my mind than a blend, i personally wanted a bottle to mix with other oils that are perhaps too sweet or too simple on their own. but make no mistake- Graveyard Dirt is a treasure all on it's own.

    To Autumn

in the bottle: yummy, sweet crispy apples wet on skin: same, but with a slight spice to it- the red leaves, perhaps? dry down: yup, crunchy leaves and sweet apple cider. this is autumn in a bottle, alright! in all: i agree precisely with what Argentwolf said: To Aumn lies right in between the autmn leafy goodness of Chant D' Autumne and the yummy apple of Fearful Pleasure. Wonderful

    Mictecacihuatl

in the bottle: oh my LORD that's good! a mix of sweet, resinous copal, fresh roses and a hint of tobacco. LOVE! wet on skin: the rose has been replaced with the sweet agave nectar, the copal is still strong, that's mostly what i'm getting at this stage. there's a slight powder note, too. dry down: the powder has vanished (whew!) and the scent is much more blended than it was before- i can't pick out any one note now, it's become this beautiful well-mixed experience. that's the only way to describe it! in all: like walking through a market square in a dream world full of dried flowers, talking skulls and creatures from a Brian Froud story.

    The Churchyard

first of all, i just have to say how much i LOVE the picture on this bottle. it's really cute and spooky at the same time! now, on to business! in the bottle: light fruit, *very* strong floral, such as is found in room fresheners. wet on skin: the green bullrush is strong at this point. it's a bit soapy, as people have stated, but mostly it's very "green". i'm getting some of the moss, too. dry down: then, slowly after it dries, this whole other fragrance emerges. it's green, soapiness evaporates and is replaced by a light-but strong-incense that has some beautiful hints of blackberry and something vaguely earthy. in all: a total morphing scent for sure, but worth the wait for the dry down: an incense light enough for day time wear, all winter long.

    Ace of Wands

in the imp: eucalyptus and dragon's blood wet on skin: dragon's blood is pulling ahead, but the herb is keeping the sweet aspect in check nicely. dry down: dragon's blood and a slight hint of...sandalwood? copal? vervain? i can't quite place it. it's like the Dragon's Blood is the "fire" and here's something under it that's the "fuel". in all: this is the third Ace i've tried and as with the others, the sentiment of the card holds true. i will try to find more and in the meantime will wear this one whenever 9 feel like i need to have a little fire lit under my butt for motivation!

    Ace of Cups

in the imp: lotus and almond. wet on skin: more of the same, the both being very well balanced, neither overpowering the other. dry down: lotus is winning, but not in a super-overpowering way. in all: this is not the "watery" scent i had feared. whoever said this is more about what the card implies hit it perfectly- this is a scent that's all about the emotional aspects of the Cups suit, and the spirituality that springs forth from that place. this is something i would wear when meditating on relationship issues OR when going to practice yoga. it's beautiful and balanced in a non-aggressive way, just like it's suit.

    Ace of Pentacles

in the imp: that's earthy alright! reminds me of Graveyard Dirt, in all the best ways. wet on skin: the oakmoss is coming to the fore and it is LOVELY. it reads a little green and a little vanilla, sort of like Tonka Bean. i LOVE it. dry down: warm, very earthy. like finding a dry spot in a cave in the middle of a snow storm. in all: perfect sense for the most important of the Pentacle cards. my suit is pentacles, and this is just brilliant for all that suit entails: material and earthly riches, prosperity, and being grounded. total winner!

    Judgement

in the imp: deeply resinous, and yes, reminds me of a particular incense i get from a witchy shop in the city right before Yule wet on skin: same, but with a little more sweetness. not foodie in the least, just resin-y and deep. and GOOD. dry down: oh YEAH. i have a thing for incense blends and this one, my friends, does NOT disappoint! in all: a fabulous scent, lives up to the weightiness of the Judgement card. this scent can indeed say "awaken, sleeper!" but not in a springtime way. this more reminds me of the kind of new life, starting over feelings i get following the new year, when i have months of cold, bracing winter ahead and plenty of time to hide out in my cave and work on myself. LOVE!

    The Tower

in the imp: smoky vetiver. wet on skin: smoky vetiver with some odd soapy flower in the background. :raises an eyebrow: dry down: vetiver, anise and a mild flower soap coming in and out. in all: i guess i had higher expectations of the Tower. as a card i fear immensely, i also have great respect for what it can teach. this scent captured the Brimstone and Fire aspects, but not so much clearing the path for continued growth.
