Random Things I Probably Should Have Mentioned in My SW Application
I used to be an earth scientist -- mostly geophysics (my undergrad thesis was on mantle convection), but also some geochem and general geology and environmental science. I love cool rocks and geological features (glaciers, volcanos, chasms, deep sea trenchs, mountains, fjords, rivers and lakes, etc), and anything about geological processes and planetary geology. I also really like hydrology and fluid dynamics.
Random academic things I'm interested in (besides history and earth science, the obvious): linguistics (especially language change and etymology), archaeology, technology transfer and development, gender as a conceptual category, women's history, philosophy, mythology, social dynamics, psychology, sociology, political science, foreign policy, ideas of space and body, culture, identity, economics, temporality, contingency, war peace, survival strategies, marginality and those at the margins and borderlands, interstices, problems of categorization, problems with liberalism, ideology, emotions, intuition, context, multiplicity, complexity, paradox, subjectivity, polymers and material science, higher mathematics, systems, patterns, cycles... Oh so many things.
But please, please feel free to ignore all this academic stuff! It's just here in case you want it.
